This morning, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, St. Ann's Warehouse Founder and Artistic Director Susan Feldman, St. Ann's Warehouse Executive Director Andrew D. Hamingson, St. Ann's Warehouse Board Chair Joseph S. Steinberg, Brooklyn Bridge Park President Regina Myer, NYC Council Member Stephen Levin, State Senator Daniel Squadron and others broke ground at the Tobacco Warehouse in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The event signals the beginning of St. Ann's $27 million development of the historic building, originally constructed in 1861, into a 25,000 SF performing arts center and community hub on the Brooklyn waterfront. The Tobacco Warehouse will serve as a permanent home for St. Ann's, which has activated found spaces for cultural use in downtown Brooklyn since in 1980. The non-profit organization plans to present its opening season in the Brooklyn Bridge Park warehouse in Fall 2015. (more...)

NYC Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White today joined Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, State Assembly Member Joseph R. Lentol and Council Member Stephen Levin to cut the ribbon on a brand new headquarters building with community space and an accessible green roof in Bushwick Inlet Park. The $31 million construction project, funded by Mayor Bloomberg, also includes a new playground, and the creation of public access to the waterfront at the water's edge. The additions to Bushwick Inlet Park build on the 2005 Greenpoint-Williamsburg rezoning which creates a framework to provide continuous public access to the area's shorefront. (more...)

Today, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and the Brooklyn Literary Council hailed the incredible success of Sunday's eighth annual Brooklyn Book Festival, supported by AT&T. One of the nation's top free literary events, the event attracted an estimated 45,000 booklovers to Downtown Brooklyn, along with a record 340+ top national and international authors, literary organizations and booksellers on 14 stages at Brooklyn Borough Hall and Plaza, Columbus Park, St. Francis College, Brooklyn Law School, the Brooklyn Historical Society and St. Ann & The Holy Trinity Church. Younger readers found their favorite books and authors at the Target Children's Area and the Youth Stoop. The Festival once again expanded to include a full week of over 60 unique literary-themed 'Bookend' events', all free or low-cost to attendees; this series of film screenings, parties, literary games and author appearances were held at clubs, bookstores, parks, theaters and libraries across Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Book Festival and AT&T today announced the 'Fan Fave' competition to reward top authors with donations to their preferred literary or literacy programs. Voting began on Monday, September 16th with the start of the more than 60 'Bookends', literary-themed events taking place throughout the borough, and it will conclude on the main day of the Festival on Sunday, September 22nd, which takes place from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM. Attendees can vote now on their favorite author by using the official AT&T Brooklyn Book Festival app, available for download on both the iPhone and Android; voting will also take place on the 22nd at the AT&T Lounge in Borough Hall Plaza. The top three will receive a cash prize to be donated to the nonprofit of their choice. (more...)
