New York City Opera and BAM Present U.S. Premiere of ANNA NICOLE Opera, 9/17

New York City Opera's 2013-14 season and BAM's 2013 Next Wave Festival begin with the U.S. premiere of Anna Nicole, an opera by composer Mark-Anthony Turnage and librettist Richard Thomas based on the flamboyant life and tragic death of Anna Nicole Smith. This highly anticipated co-production includes seven performances at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House, on September 17, 19, 21, 24, 25, 27, and 28 at 7:30pm. Individual tickets are on sale August 12 (August 5 for Friends of BAM) at BAM.org or through BAM Ticket Services at 718.636.4100.

On Tuesday, June 4, the office of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined the Brooklyn Book Festival, members of the Brooklyn Literary Council and top authors, publishing industry leaders, editors and literary agents to publicly reveal the more than one hundred and forty national and international authors who have already agreed to participate in the eighth annual Brooklyn Book Festival and to welcome back AT&T as its major sponsor. The Festival will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Borough Hall, and other venues including St. Francis College, Brooklyn Historical Society, St. Ann and the Holy Trinity Church and Columbus Park. On June 3rd at Midnight, the 27-day $100,000 Kickstarter campaign to save Coney Island's Mermaid Parade will come to a close. On the morning of May 30th, the initial goal was met through small contributions from people around the world. Widespread attention from media, celebrities (Alec Baldwin, Darren Aronofsky, etc.), and, well, everybody has created a veritable flash flood of support for the 30 year old event.

Brooklyn Chamber Announces Coney Island USA As 1,200th Member

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has announced that it has reached 1,200 members with the addition of Coney Island USA. In existence since 1980, Coney Island USA is responsible for bringing a number of great events to the famous Brooklyn neighborhood, including the annual Mermaid Parade along Surf Avenue.
