Rattlestick Playwrights Theater's Artistic Director David Van Asselt and Managing Director Brian Long have announced that following strong reviews, the world premiere of Ode to Joy, written and directed by Craig Lucas, will extend three weeks through Saturday, April 19 at the Cherry Lane Theatre, 38 Commerce Street.

Signature Theatre is currently presenting the world premiere of THE OPEN HOUSE, by Will Eno and directed by Oliver Butler. All tickets for the initial run of the production are $25 as part of the Signature Ticket Initiative: A Generation of Access. The production opened last night, March 3, 2014, and is now playing through through March 23 in The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues). Hell nearly froze over - or, perhaps we should we say burned brighter than ever before - as a result of the sheer, stupefying, awe-inspiring array of major theatre stars populating FX's hit horror anthology series AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN last night. Given the legendary leading ladies lighting up the night, AMERICAN HORROR STORY: TONY AWARDS is more like it!

Tom Griffin's 'THE BOYS NEXT DOOR' is a tricky script…its subject matter is a group home in the Boston area housing four mentally-challenged adult men; Arnold, Norman, Lucien and Barry. They have a caretaker, Jack, who lives offsite, and the play progresses through a series of vignettes illustrating the challenges of their everyday lives. As depressing as that may sound, the script has many comic moments, and it's a tightrope to balance the humor with the pathos. It was made into a mildly effective television movie in 1996 featuring Nathan Lane, Courtney B. Vance and Mare Winningham. I say 'mildly effective' because the play has an extra layer of difficulty in that the humor is generated by the plight of its characters…the audience laughs at the behavior and reactions of these damaged men, and without careful direction and acting skill, there could be guilt and self-loathing in the laughter rather than charm and warmth. The TV version fell victim to this, but STAGEright Theatre Company presents a beautiful rendering of the show under the direction of Jay D. Irwin.

Craig T. Nelson is temporarily abandoning Parenthood for Hawaii. According to Zap2it, the acclaimed television actor has officially inked a deal to guest star on CBS' Hawaii Five-0 reboot this May.

Playwrights Horizons World Premiere of The Flick, a new play by Obie Award winner Annie Baker (Circle Mirror Transformation at PH, The Aliens, her recent adaptation of Uncle Vanya), opened last night, March 12. Directed by Obie Award winner Sam Gold (Circle Mirror Transformation, Kin and The Big Meal at PH; Seminar and Picnic on Broadway), the production will play through Sunday, March 31 at Playwrights Horizons' Mainstage Theater (416 West 42nd Street). Roundabout Theatre Company's new Broadway production of Picnic, in association with Darren Bagert and Martin Massman, closes today, Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway (227 West 42nd Street). Since opening on Jan. 13, PICNIC has played 47 regular performances. It opened for previews on Dec. 14, 2012.
