GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM, Starring Harvey Fierstein, Extends at The Public Theater

The Public Theater announced today a one-week extension for the world premiere of GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM, written by Martin Sherman and directed by Sean Mathias. The show officially opened on Wednesday, April 5, and was previously extended through Sunday, May 14. It will now run an additional week through Sunday, May 21.

Select guests at Playhouse on Park theater this past Sunday night were the first to learn of the 2017-2018 Mainstage Series. Joined by Executive Director Tracy Flater and Co-Artistic Director Darlene Zoller, Co-Artistic Director Sean Harris spoke from the stage with fervor: 'We are passionate about these pieces, and that resonates [with] the cast, crew, and design team. And because we're so intimate here, it'll bleed over into the audience. [Theater] becomes a communal experience, a beautiful event.' This Spring, Joe's Pub at The Public is headquarters for flamenco and flamenco-inspired artists. The acclaimed Flamenco Festival's New York edition returns, from March 10-18, with their Flamenco & Beyond series, featuring Josemi Carmona & Javier Colina, Alfonso Aroca, Sonia Olla & Ismael Fernandez and Ultra High Flamenco. Then, from April 17-27, Joe's Pub favorites, the dazzling Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca, return for their annual weeklong residency with a new show called Intimo.

McCarter Theatre Center closes the 2016-2017 Theater Series with a new production
of Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage's Intimate Apparel, a story of an African-American seamstress living in 1905 New York City pursuing her dreams of love and independence. Directed by Jade King Carroll, Intimate Apparel will run from May 5 to June 4.

The Public Theater announced today that three final performances have been added to the critically acclaimed New York premiere of Latin History for Morons, created and performed by John Leguizamo. Directed by Tony Taccone, this fiercely funny, satirical one-man show was inspired by Leguizamo's observation that Latinos are essentially invisible in the standard American history curriculum.

Rajiv Joseph's plays include Gruesome Playground Injuries, All This Intimacy and the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. On screen, he's written for TV series Nurse Jackie and feature film Draft Day, starring Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner. His 2015 play Guards at the Taj, about two imperial guards in 17th-century India handed a gruesome decree, has its European premiere at the Bush Theatre, directed by Jamie Lloyd, beginning previews on 7 April.
