Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company opens its 2016-2017 season with THE MAIDS by Jean Genet. Loosely based on the infamous Papin sisters who brutally murdered their employer and her daughter in Le Mans, France, in 1933, THE MAIDS tells the story of two servants who act out elaborate role-plays while their mistress is away, all centered around killing her.

BWW Review: THE BIRDS are flocking funny at Classical Theatre Company
by Brett Cullum - Apr 16, 2016

It's charmingly adolescent, and full of cock and pecker jokes which feature prominently in this lark of a piece. Who knew Greek comedy could be so broad and bawdy?

BWW Reviews: Black Lab Theatre's TIGERS BE STILL is Refreshingly Funny
by Nyderah Williams - Jan 26, 2015

Black Lab Theatre's Houston premiere of Kim Rosenstock's TIGERS BE STILL is incredibly funny as it deals with the not so funny theme of depression. We've all had those days. You know which days. The dark days. The days where it seems impossible to get anything done much less get out of bed. Sometimes those days can last for weeks. Even if you do manage to overcome getting out of bed, dysfunction can still follow you around.

Black Lab Theatre to Present TIGERS BE STILL Next Month
by Tyler Peterson - Dec 9, 2014

Black Lab Theatre has become well known for showcasing the city's funniest young talents, and this season's January regional premiere of Kim Rosenstock's Tigers Be Still will be no exception. Black Lab artistic director Jordan Jaffe will delight Houston audiences with the city's most dynamic father-son acting combo, pairing the award winning talents of Justin Doran and his son, Ty Doran in an endearing and humorous look at family dysfunction and high school art instruction. Doran, a resident director at Black Lab Theatre and frequent star at Stages Repertory Theatre and the Alley Theatre, will star together with his son Ty in Tigers Be Still with the senior Doran playing Joseph Moore, a high school principal and young Ty his wayward son Zach.

Since its World Premiere performance on February 14, 1895, Oscar Wilde's THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST has been an enduring favorite of audiences. Critics recognized the play for its wit and popularity with audiences. In 2014, those same attributes hold up well. Currently, Houston's Classical Theatre Company is producing THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and earning many hearty laughs with their take on the classic.

BWW Reviews: Black Lab Theatre's ASSISTANCE is Witty and Relateable
by David Clarke - Sep 19, 2013

For the most part, a large chunk of Generation Y is out of college and in the workforce. According to some, we are the young hopefuls that were born between the early 1980s through the early 1990s. Others push the birth dates back as far as the 2000s. Either way, our voice is gaining in strength, and we're making our mark. Sadly, our mark is one of frustration. A recent study by Office Angels shows that 27 percent of 25-34 year olds are unhappy in their current job, and according to Moster.com 55 percent of Generation Y employees see their current employer as a mere stopping off point in their career path. Luckily, Leslye Headland, author of BACHELORETTE (which was adapted for film in 2012 and starred Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher, and Rebel Wilson) once worked as Harvey Weinstein's personal assistant and understands this plight. She has crafted a deft comedy that addresses workplace dissatisfaction with her 2008 play ASSISTANCE.

Black Lab Theatre to Stage ASSISTANCE, Begin. 9/19
by Tyler Peterson - Sep 4, 2013

In anticipation of the new NBC hit comedy sitcom based on the hit off-Broadway play Assistance, Black Lab Theatre opens its doors on September 19, 2013, with the regional premiere of the original work -- a hilarious single act play that revolves around entry level, 20-somethings frantically trying to please their hellacious boss as calls and drama ring in. The play's TV adaptation (to star Krysten Ritter and Alfred Molina) hits the TV's on NBC later this season with Will Ferrell's Gary Sanchez Productions producing and play's author Leslye Headland signed on as chief writer. Headland herself began her career as the assistant to legendary Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and captures the angst of a new generation trying to hit the financial big time, one post-it at a time. This 'The Office' meets 'The Devil Wears Prada' Off-Broadway comedy about ambition-driven Generation-Y staffers will run at Wildfish Theater in the Galleria Area September 19 through Oct 5 at 8pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays plus a Monday Industry Night on Sept 30.

BWW Reviews: A WRINKLE IN TIME - A Splendid, Engaging Adaptation of the Alluring Classic Novel
by David Clarke - Jan 26, 2013

Main Street Theater's Theater for Youth program's current production of A WRINKLE IN TIME is a splendid production of the classic novel by Madeleine L'Engle. The play tells the beloved story of Meg Murray and, her little brother, Charles Wallace's journey through time and space in search of their father. The play, like the novel, examines the power of self-discovery and courage.
