Old Globe Executive Producer Lou Spisto today announced the cast and creative team for the West Coast Premiere of Matthew Lopez's The Whipping Man. The Civil War drama is directed by Giovanna Sardelli and will run in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre through June 13. The Boomerang Theatre Company (Tim Errickson, Artistic Director; Sue Abbott, Managing Director) will include new productions of plays by Anton Chekhov, Shakespeare, Christopher Fry, as well as a world premiere production and new play development in their 2010 season. The season begins with the FIRST FLIGHT new play festival, followed by an outdoor production of THE TEMPEST in June and July, and concludes with the company's annual three play rotating rep series in September.

I suppose the cocktail conversation among certain factions of the Off-Broadway community this summer will be centered around whether the ending of Lila Rose Kaplan's Wildflower a) thoroughly ruined the play, b) logically brought all the play's diverse pieces together or c) was just another example of the evening's well-intentioned flaws. I lean toward the latter.
