SONDHEIMAS is the annual quasi-religious celebration of the birth of the savior of musical theater, Stephen Sondheim. The team that brought you last year's sold-out show at 54 Below is back on March 21 (11:30PM), with another raucous celebration of the man, the music, and the mythos. Expect songs familiar and obscure, irreverent schtick, and a warm holiday feeling that can only come from a gathering of the faithful celebrating together.

Joe Carroll (Cinderella, Once), Eric LaJuan Summers (Motown The Musical), Genson Blimline (Rock Of Ages), and Larry Owens (Fat Camp) join Rebecca Naomi Jones (Big Love, American Idiot), Alysha Umphress (On the Town, American Idiot), Kacie Sheik (Hair), Theo Stockman (Hair, American Idiot), Matthew Hydzik (Side Show, West Side Story), Ben Roseberry (The Lion King), Sara Kapner (Bare), and Kasie Gasparini (Mamma Mia), along with show creators Zac Lasher (U-Melt, Bebe Buell Band, Maggie Rose), Jay Leibowitz (The Acting Company, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey), and their band featuring Kevin Griffin and Rob Salzer of U-Melt, Dan McNaney and Sparkie Sandler. Well after Broadway orchestra's begin their overtures, ensemble members take their dance breaks, and performers belt out their eleven- o'clock numbers, the party continues at various cabaret venues throughout New York City. Join an all-star cast for a one night only celebration of new musicals! Musical Theatre Factory has just completed its inaugural summer season of developing new musical theatre and is hosting a concert at Joe's Pub to celebrate. FROM THE FACTORY FLOOR will feature songs from over fifteen new musicals and all proceeds from the event will benefit future development programs at MTF.

There have been a lot of versions of Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey's (book, music and lyrics) GREASE that I've seen over the years. Only one, New Line Theatre's brilliant staging a few years back, actually adhered to the musical as originally conceived. The majority have followed the template laid down by the 1978 movie version that was tailored to fit the stars; Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. That's the version currently gracing the stage of The MUNY, although it features a number of interesting changes, beginning with a choral version of the opening "Alma Mater" that actually utilizes the lyrics to the song "We Go Together". It's certainly an entertaining ride, and is much improved in many ways over the version staged here back in 2007.

The Muny presents the sixth show of its 96th season, Grease, directed and choreographed by Denis Jones, with music direction by Michael Horsley. Grease is sponsored by Emerson. Check out the Instagram photos below!
