The Metropolitan Opera announced plans for a series of free outdoor events this summer: operatic recitals that will take place in parks throughout the city and encore screenings of the Met's popular HD shows in Lincoln Center Plaza.

The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera's Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series of live performance transmissions into movie theaters around the world, will expand in its fifth season to 1500 theaters (an increase of 300 theaters), while adding Egypt, Portugal, and Spain to its network of now 46 participating countries.

After a wildly successful season that included a critically acclaimed company debut with the Los Angeles Opera in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, after which the Los Angeles Times exclaimed that she 'stole a show that was hard to steal', and her role debut as Elena in La donna del lago with the Paris Opera, which the Financial Times hailed as 'simply the best singing...heard in years,' mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato ends her 2009-10 season on a high note: nominated for a 2010 Gramophone 'Artist of the Year' Award and winning a 2010 ECHO Klassik Award in the category of female 'Singer of the Year' (tenor Jonas Kaufmann won the male equivalent).

Starting next month, the Met will present Summer HD Encores, a series of popular Live in HD screenings from recent seasons, featuring opera's greatest stars in productions of repertory classics. Beginning June 16 and running through July 28, six operas will be shown in more than 400 movie theaters across the United States.

KS Rudolf Mazzola Passes Away At Age 70

70 year old KS Rudolf Mazzola dies yesterday, Tuesday, 18 May 2010, in Vienna. Born in Switzerland, studied singing in Basel. He was a fellow at the Opera Studio in Zurich, first a commitment was given to St. Gallen and 1969 in Basel. In 1975 he was engaged as a soloist of the Vienna Volksoper, until he was hired in 1977 at the Vienna State Opera, where he was a longtime member of the company and the works. In addition, he has performed regularly at the Salzburg Festival, Munich, Paris, Zurich and Barcelona. In 1988 he was appointed to the Austrian Chamber singers.
Robert Barefield Joins Hartt Vocal Studies Division Faculty

The Hartt School is pleased to announce the appointment of its newest faculty member, Robert Barefield, baritone. Barefield, who will begin his appointment in Hartt's Vocal Studies Division this fall, has performed as a soloist with organizations throughout the United States and in Europe, including the New Orleans Opera, the Mississippi Symphony, the Arizona Opera, the Dorian Opera Theatre, the Central City Opera, the Ohio Light Opera, and Operafestival di Roma in Italy.
