Broadway Records enters the studio today to record the original New York cast recording of Cagney, which will be released digitally and at the theatre on Friday, September 30, 2016, and in stores on October 14th.

The New Group has announced additional casting for Sweet Charity, the production launching the company's 2016-2017 Season.  Choreographed by Joshua Bergasse and directed by Leigh Silverman, this production features Yesenia Ayala, Darius Barnes, James Brown III, Asmeret Ghebremichael, Shuler Hensley, Sasha Hutchings, Donald Jones, Jr., Nikka Graff Lanzarone, Emily Padgett and Joel Perez, and as previously announced, two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as Charity Hope Valentine.  A limited Off-Broadway engagement plays November 2 - December 11 at The Pershing Square Signature Center (The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre, 480 West 42nd Street), with Official Opening Night set for Sunday, November 20.

As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring two-time Tony Award winner Christian Borle, just announced the show will begin performances Tuesday, March 28, 2017 and officially opens Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre (205 West 46th Street). The Pirates of Penzance is possibly the most popular comic operetta and its history of adoration has been consistent since its premier in 1879. Revivals of The Pirates of Penzance were ubiquitous throughout the 20th Century with Joseph Papp's production in 1980 becoming the most lauded. This version featured new musical arrangements which pulled the operetta closer to musical theatre, making it accessible for contemporary audiences all while remaining respectful to the original version. Other adaptators have tried their hands only to fall short. Pirates (or, Gilbert and Sullivan Plunder'd) was a failed experiment that set the story in the caribbean and transformed the Pirate King into a pseudo-Captain Jack Sparrow.

Last year, it was announced that a Broadway revival of SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE was on the way for summer 2016, with direction by Jerry Zaks and choreography by Warren Carlyle. Those plans never panned out, but now according to an Equity casting notice, the show, which holds the record as Broadway's longest running revue (2036 performances), will get a NYC developmental lab with a different creative team. A presentation will be held on September 24, under the direction of John Rando, with choreography by Joshua Bergasse.

Barrington Stage Company (BSC), the award-winning theatre in Downtown Pittsfield, MA, under the leadership of Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and Managing Director Tristan Wilson, announced the creation of The Wolfson Theater Center, at 122 North Street, Pittsfield, MA. and Broadwayworld was there. The center is made possible through a generous gift from Jessie and Bernard Wolfson, and will serve as the center of BSC operations. Renovations on the building are set to begin in August 2016, with the administrative offices set to relocate in November 2016. BSC's current office space, known as Octagon House (58 Union Street), will be converted into company housing. A.J. Schnopp Jr. Construction Inc., of Dalton, MA, will be the general contractor.

This week, July 17, marks the 117th birthday of Hollywood legend James Cagney. This very same week, CAGNEY, the new hit musical about James Cagney, plays its 117th performance at The Westside Theatre, upstairs. Among the stars who've recently come out to celebrate Cagney are Mario Cantone (Laugh Whore, 'Sex & the City'), Jerry Dixon (If/Then, Once on this Island), Lorna Luft (Guys & Dolls, Irving Berlin's White Christmas, Grease 2), and Tony Award winner Len Cariou (Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music). Happy Birthday, James Cagney!  This week marks the 117th birthday of James Cagney (he was born on July 17, 1899). Also this week, Cagney, the new hit musical about Hollywood's tough guy in tap shoes, plays its 117th performance at The Westside Theater, Upstairs (407 West 43rd Street, between 9th & 10th Aves.). 

Robert Creighton, embodying the spirit of James Cagney in this energetic, fast-paced, biographical musical, Cagney, playing at the Westside Theater/Upstairs, Off-Broadway, brings the Hollywood icon to life. He has the physical plant of Cagney, as well as a dynamic talent for tap dancing, singing, and playing the tough guy, not unlike Cagney. It was exhilarating to be in attendance at this high energy performance on Friday, June 8, 2016. The world premiere was in Florida, 2009. The show has gone through its own evolution on its way to New York.

Cagney's pugnacious attitude and formidable talent grabbed Creighton by the lapels, and now he's starring in a Yankee Doodle Dandy of a musical.
