BWW Review: DEAR WORLD Concert Reading Beguiles at VPAC
by Don Grigware
- Oct 3, 2016
Great works of literature are often beautifully adapted into opera and ballet. Think of Federico Garcia Lorca's The House of Bernarda Alba, to name just one. Jean Giraudoux's The Madwoman of Chaillot is also tremendously passionate and digs deep into the female psyche, producing emotional rhythms that lend themselves to music. Whereas Lorca's work concentrates on sexual repression, Giraudoux's is more romantic and... goes a step further into the realm of championing a cause, a desire to right human wrongs and change the world.

by Jeffrey Walker
- Jun 12, 2015
Countess Aurelie and her fellow madwomen are back to save Chaillot, Paris and the world in a stylishly realized theatrical tour-de-force. As directed by Christopher Henley, WSC Avant Bard's THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT is a feast for the eyes and ears. The production, in an exciting and vibrant translation by Laurence Senelick, also feeds the soul as a reminder of how precious our fragile earth really is and how important it is for someone, anyone, to take a stand to protect it.
This MADWOMAN is also brilliantly acted from the members of the quirky ensemble to the queen bee herself, Countess Aurelie, effortlessly brought to life by Avant Bard company member Cam Magee.
BWW Reviews: Playing Marital and Mortal Odds: 13 DEAD HUSBANDS at Cohesion
by Jack L. B. Gohn
- Mar 14, 2015
If charming and silly are your thing, you'll have fun at Thirteen Dead Husbands by Tom Horan. Set in 'a Paris of the Imagination,' it centers around Dee-Dee (Cassandra Dutt) the 'most beautiful girl in the world,' whose stunning looks come with a serious drawback. The drawback: You marry her, you die promptly of some kind of unpredictable catastrophe. When the action starts, she has already been widowed twelve times, and has a trunk-full of wedding dresses to prove it. The question then becomes what kind of man would now seek Dee-Dee's hand, and what are his chances (of matrimony, and if so, of survival) if he does?
