On this day in 1976 the first Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof opened at the Winter Garden Theatre starring Zero Mostel reprising his Tony Award-winning role. The production, however, would be short-lived - running a mere 167 performances. Jerome Robbins directed and choreographed the revival.

Though Herschel Bernardi's name was above the title on the opening nights of Broadway's BAJOUR and ZORBA, the musical theatre role he's most known for is one where he came in as a replacement, Teyve in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.

Forever bonded with his father through this experience (even wearing pieces of his father's original costume for the role!), the moment marked the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Today, Bernardi speaks exclusively with BWW about his profoundly sentimental and history-making performance!

I must have been an incredibly naive 12 year old. As my family and I were leaving the Marriott Marquis Theatre after a performance of the revival of Annie Get Your Gun, we passed by the stage door. A hoard of people were crowded behind the barricades, eagerly clutching their playbills, sharpies, and cameras in hopes to snag an autograph or photo with Bernadette Peters and Tom Wopat. We were watching from across the street. A security person was guarding the door, and would escort Bernadette and Tom as they made their way through the crowd, greeting their fans. Once they were done, they each got into the back seats of their respective black Lincoln town cars and rode off into the night. What I couldn't wrap my head around, at the time, was....where do they go?

The production will now star Kate Katcher, who debuted on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof opposite Zero Mostel and repeated the role of Tzeitel with Herschel Bernardi, directed by Jerome Robbins. She also appeared in Wonderful Town with Lauren Bacall and Two for the Seesaw directed by Judith Ivey. Katcher replaces Daisy Eagan, who leaves the cast to star in Wit in North Carolina.

New Worlds Theatre Project (Ellen Perecman, Producing Artistic Director) has announced that it will present the world premiere of David Pinski's comic tragedy, Professor Brenner, directed by Paul Takacs, in a translation by Ellen Perecman, beginning Sunday, November 1 at 2pm at HERE, 145 Sixth Avenue. The opening night is set for Monday, November 2 at 7pm.

Today we are talking to a world renowned stage and screen star who has excelled in playing a dizzying array of recognizable characters onstage and onscreen over the course of his unique and diverse career - the affable Alfred Molina.
