Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater will produce the first in-the-round staging of Ruined, the 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama by Arena Stage Project Resident Lynn Nottage and directed by Resident Playwright Charles Randolph-Wright (Director of Arena Stage's Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies). Ruined is the stirring tale of Mama Nadi, a mother figure loosely based on Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage and Her Children, who provides refuge for women affected by civil war ravaging the Democratic Republic of Congo. The production features an expanded company with cast members playing live music and additional ensemble roles featuring University of Maryland students. Ruined runs April 22-June 5, 2011 in the Fichandler Stage.

Directed by David Shamburger, with musical direction by Jo Lynn Burks, The Drowsy Chaperone is an unmistakably top-flight production, performed with stylish glee by the cast of student actors who bring the 'musical within a comedy' to such vibrantly mesmerizing life. Shamburger's focused direction and confident staging is seen throughout the production, which features the worky of six choreographers (Debbie Belue, Alyssa Maddox, Emily Tello, Emma Carpenter, Meghan Glogower and the director himself). That many choreographers could well lead to confusion (what's the old axiom about too many cooks spoiling the broth?) and a serious lack of onstage cohesion, but instead they come together on The Drowsy Chaperone to create a wonderfully danced musical comedy that flows seamlessly from one scene to the next.

Jefferson Performing Arts Society (JPAS) is thrilled to be working with New Orleans theatre mega-talents Gary Rucker and Kelly Fouchi of Theatre 13 in the upcoming 34th Season 2011-2012. These two local theatre regulars join JPAS as director and choreographer (respectively) for a co-production of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE in September of 2011. Rucker and Fouchi have graced the JPAS stages in past productions and JPAS is ecstatic to have these two on the production side for the 34th Season. As we welcome in a new year of great theatre in the nation's capital, I thought it would be fun to do one of those “Best of 2010' lists as well as preview what's opening in January on DC area stages. So let's raise our glasses and offer a toast to all those theatre companies who gave us great productions in 2010, and to the upcoming 2011 theatre season!
