Boston Symphony Orchestra & Bernard Haitink to Return to Carnegie Hall, 2/11

This February, Carnegie Hall presents the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) in two performances led by esteemed conductor Bernard Haitink as part of the orchestra's annual visit to Carnegie Hall. The BSO's first program on Tuesday, February 11 at 8:00 p.m. features Mr. Haitink conducting Steven Stucky's arrangement of Purcell's Funeral Music for Queen Mary and Brahms's Symphony No. 4 in E Minor. In addition, Murray Perahia joins the orchestra for Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 54.

Now in its 10th year, Goodman Theatre's 2013 New Stages festival features five free new plays-two fully staged workshop productions performed in repertory plus three staged readings-in the Owen Theatre, now through December 22. All five plays celebrate Latino playwrights: The Upstairs Concierge, a contemporary farce about celebrity and baseball by Pulitzer Prize finalist (for The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity) Kristoffer Diaz; and The Solid Sand Below, an examination of the intoxicating nature of war which Martin Zimmerman developed during his time as a member of the Goodman's Playwrights Unit, and which was selected for the 2013 National Playwrights Conference at The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Connecticut. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Announces 5th Annual BSO Academy Week in June 2014

Baltimore, Md. (November 26, 2013) — The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is pleased to announce the launch of its fifth annual BSO Academy Week as well as a new Academy program specifically designed for aspiring and experienced music educators, the BSO Music Educators Academy. FromSaturday, June 14 through Saturday, June 21, 2014 instrumentalists from across the country are invited to rehearse and perform side-by-side with BSO musicians and Music Director Marin Alsop in an intensive music “fantasy” camp. The BSO's Academy Week was notably featured in The New York Times and has become a popular destination for amateur musicians from across the country. From Monday, July 7 through Saturday, July 12, 2014 instrumental and vocal music educators will take part in the first-ever week-long orchestral immersion program playing side-by-side with BSO musicians and expert faculty to improve musicianship, performance technique, conducting skills, improvisation, arranging, practice techniques and ensemble skills. A distinctive professional development program, qualifying participants in the BSO Music Educators Academy may obtain three graduate credits through the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Liberty Mountain Publishing, Liberty University's newest book-publishing entity, released its first book this week, 'Claire and Anna: The Live Nativity,' by Jonathan Parker. The rhyming children's book offers a Christmas-themed story; 28 pages of detailed, full-color illustrations; and a cause: the proceeds benefit the author's niece, Claire Elliot Parker. Claire is a 1-year old who was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia in July.
