BWW Review: WEST SIDE STORY Entertains in Face of Controversy at The Des Moines Playhouse

Amidst months of controversy and questioning, Des Moines Playhouse's West Side Story succeeds to be one of the best and emotionally charged shows Des Moines has seen in a while. That is, if one can get past the apparent lack of Latinx actors in the show.

Due to popular demand, Off-Broadway's hit puppet parody, That Golden Girls Show! will extend its stay at the Union Square's DR2 Theatre (103 E 15th Street) for the holidays as a new block of tickets is made available through January 1, 2017. 

Theater House of Black Presents Stage Adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' 10/7-8

Theater House of Black, whose members recently staged the Filipino adaptation of Federico Garcia Lorca's 'The House of Bernarda Alba, ' seems to have a penchant for houses that are shrouded in mystery. Next off from the group is '#14 Leandro Road,' a Filipino theatrical adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's most celebrated short story, 'The Fall of the House of Usher,' first published in 1839.

Drama Desk nominee Jonathan Rockefeller debuts a brand new tribute show entitled That Golden Girls Show! - A Puppet Parody that will have its world premiere in NYC. This limited run began performances on September 19 and will open on Monday, October 3, running through December 11, 2016 at DR2 Theatre (103 East 15th Street).

Billy Lewis Jr. of Fox's Glee Will Star in Off-Broadway Rock Odyssey THE PORTAL at Minetta Lane Theatre

The New York premiere of THE PORTAL will begin an Off-Broadway open-ended run on October 27, 2016 at the Minetta Lane Theatre. THE PORTAL is a rock odyssey conceived and directed by Luke Comer, with original music composed by Tierro Lee and Luke Comer, starring Billy Lewis Jr. (Mason McCarthy on the Fox series 'Glee'), and choreographed by Jessica Chen. Opening night is set for Sunday, November 13.

Little and librettist Royce Vavrek--who made a splash in contemporary opera circles with their post-apocalyptic DOG DAYS--as their first 'grand' opera. David Goldyn Productions presents the World Premiere of DADDY ISSUES, a new comedy by Marshall Goldberg. Directed by David Goldyn, previews begin March 31 at Davenport Theatre with opening night slated for April 7. The production will now star Kate Katcher, who debuted on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof opposite Zero Mostel and repeated the role of Tzeitel with Herschel Bernardi, directed by Jerome Robbins. She also appeared in Wonderful Town with Lauren Bacall and Two for the Seesaw directed by Judith Ivey. Katcher replaces Daisy Eagan, who leaves the cast to star in Wit in North Carolina.
