by Roy Berko - Mar 11, 2014

Since he became the artistic director of Cleveland Public Theatre, Raymond Bobgan has set a clear path. He has organized a theatre that centers on practicality. It lives within its means, is well organized and is artistically creative. The play productions respond to 'the political events, societal movements and new technology.' It has a spiritual mission that places 'high value on truth, even if that truth cannot be easily packaged or explained.'

BWW Reviews: Beck's THE PITMEN PAINTERS - Truth is Often More Meaningful Than Fiction
by Roy Berko - Jun 2, 2013

Have you looked at a painting and asked, 'What does that mean?' What would the world be like without the arts? Does art have to have meaning? Does the learning of artistic technique thwart a painter's discovery and creativity? What happens when a group of uneducated, unsophisticated men are encouraged to let their emotions create their world? These and many more questions are confronted in Lee Hall's THE PITMEN PAINTERS, now on stage at Beck Center.

There is a reason that colleges across the US love to do this musical - it's a fun, raunchy social satire, unfortunately Miners Alley played it a little too safe in their interpretation of this naughty production.

BWW Reviews: STANDING ON CEREMONY; THE GAY MARRIAGE PLAYS at Cleveland Public Theatre
by Roy Berko - Oct 10, 2012

Every era has its controversies. Since theatre represents the era from which it comes, here in the United States, attitudes about the women's movement were presented by feminist plays.
