With 75 stage productions employing hundreds of professionals, making theatre is an important cog in the area's cultural economy. In fact, many consider the region a hot spot for Broadway bound shows, and a popular summer destination for theatre-goers from around the nation.

Maberry Theatricals have announced that Robin Lord Taylor, who stars as Oswald Cobblepot (aka The Penguin) on FOX's hit series "Gotham," will take the leap in WHITE RABBIT RED RABBIT, the internationally-acclaimed play by Nassim Soleimanpour, on Halloween, October 31 at 8pm. 

Williamstown Theatre Festival opens the 2016 Season with Tennessee Williams' Tony Award-winning play, The Rose Tattoo, now playing through July 17. Obie Award-winner Trip Cullman directs Academy Award-winner Marisa Tomei in this new production, a new production of this intoxicating comedy, which won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1951. After retreating from the world in grief, widow Serafina (Tomei) revives and rejoins the world when the hot-blooded trucker Alvaro (Christopher Abbott) arrives at her doorstep. Barbara Rosenblat will be appearing as Assunta in the Williamstown Theatre Festival's new production of Pulitzer Prize-winner Tennessee Williams' intoxicating comedy THE ROSE TATTOO (June 28-July 17).   Obie Award-winner Trip Cullman directs the play, which won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1951.  In addition to Marisa Tomei who stars as the grieving widow Serafina and Christopher Abbott as the hot-blooded trucker Alvaro, Rosenblat will be joining her 'Orange Is the New Black' costar Constance Shulman.  Rosenblat received international recognition for her portrayal of cancer-stricken inmate Miss Rosa, while Shulman plays Yoga Jones on that popular Netflix program.

Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the LA Film Festival and Film Independent at LACMA, announced nominations for the 2016 Spirit Awards this morning. Film Independent President Josh Welsh presided over the press conference held at W Hollywood, with actors John Boyega and Elizabeth Olsen presenting the nominations. Nominees for Best Feature included Anomalisa, Beasts of No Nation, Carol, Spotlight and Tangerine.

Film Independent has announced the nominees for the 31st Independent Spirt Awards, which will take place Saturday, February 27 at 2:00pm PT / 5:00pm ET.
