“We came up with this pitch that alliterates,” says Maine State Music Theatre's Managing Director Stephanie Dupal of the theatre's description of their upcoming 2016 summer season. “Relive the romance of Ghost; feel the fire of Evita; welcome the warmth of Fiddler; and experience the excitement of Mama Mia,” she recites. Joined by Artistic Director Curt Dale Clark, the pair is talking about their plans for their main stage productions and the various new initiatives this dynamic team has launched since taking the helm of the company's leadership in 2013. By all accounts it is to be a season to surpass even the excellence of the prior ones!
BWW Review: GHOST THE MUSICAL - Visual Effects Enhance a Well Written Show
by Tim Carney
- Feb 8, 2016
With some spectacular visual effects and thrilling performances, Ghost the musical opened at the Regent Theatre last night in front of an appreciative audience. From the outset Jon Driscoll's video projections set the scene for what is a particularly clever musical both optically and emotionally. While Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard's score isn't overtly memorable there are some stunning melodies that capture characters inner thoughts and feelings and move the action forward, staying faithful to the original film with Bruce Joel Rubin adapting his original screenplay for the stage.

Many may not be familiar with the musical Ghost. Ghost is the musical adaption of the 1990 movie by the same name, written by Bruce Joel Rubin. The musical garnered incredible attention over on Britain's West End. The show's music and overall structure is very different from most classic musicals, with much of the music shouldering away from the typical "show tune" genre. What audiences hear will sound more like Christian Rock, Gospel, and even Disco. "[The music] is definitely more demanding," says music director Kyle Carozza, "the vocal ranges necessary are higher, and there gets to be well over eight parts at some points. I don't dislike it (the style of music), but I like the big, belty, vibrato type of musical theatre better." When I prompted Kyle about whether or not teaching this genre was harder, he surprised me by saying, "No, I think it's somewhat easier. It's more choir-like and isn't as intricate as some musical theatre."

BWW Reviews: GHOST, THE MUSICAL at SoLuna Studio
by Melissa Giordano
- May 28, 2015
It is a brave decision for a local theatre to take on a show that was not exactly well received for its Broadway run. However, it seems that if it is derived from a popular movie it is certainly worth the risk and, in the end, people will attend the show. In seeing Ghost, The Musical at SoLuna Studio, you will see it is an excellent decision to add this show to their 2015 season.
