East Boston's Johanna Perri will appear in the leading role of 'Velma Kelly' in The Company Theatre's production of Chicago, from tonight, April 5 through 28, at The Company Theatre Centre for the Arts, 30 Accord Park Drive, Norwell, MA.

The stars came out last night when Lee Roy Reams made his 54 Below debut in 'Song & Dance Man.' After the show, Reams was joined backstage by friends and colleagues including Leslie Uggams, Len Cariou, Dana Ivey, Penny Fuller, Tony Sheldon, Nick Adams, Marilyn Maye, Anita Gillette, and Etan Aronson. Pittsburgh CLO has announced the cast for the Stephen Sondheim celebration, Side By Side By Sondheim, which will run May 23 through August 18 at the CLO Cabaret.

The first revival of Pippin is in previews now, set to open on April 25, so producer Barry Weisler guided a tour to show off all the chaos of the pre-performance backstage at the Music Box Theatre. Way Off Broadway, Iowa's only professional musical theatre company and the residential company at the Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts is delighted to announce their Iowa premiere production, the newest version of Cabaret which won the Tony for Best Revival. Cabaret is a musical based on a book written by Christopher Isherwood, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. The 1966 Broadway production became a hit and spawned a 1972 film as well as numerous subsequent productions including a major 're-think' revival in 1998, which WOB will present.

La Jolla Playhouse announces a special engagement of Steppin' Out with Ben Vereen as part of its cabaret series, running tonight, March 29, 2013 at 8:00 pm, Saturday, March 30 at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm and Sunday, March 31 at 2:00 pm. The four performances will take place in the Playhouse's specially-designed performance space in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre, created by the Playhouse's scene shop artisans for the theatre's 2011, 2012 and 2013 Galas.

As an undergraduate theater major in the early 1970s, I heard music everywhere. It seemed to pour out of every office and workspace around the department. (And in the LP era, if you wanted more than the radio, this meant schlepping a twenty pound record player and a dozen or so albums from your home to the campus, sometimes requiring back-and-forth trips from the car. If you go to that much trouble, you want to keep the music playing.) In the hushed costume shop with its quietly industrious all female staff, Broadway ruled, with Stephen Sondheim's recent Company and Follies in heavy rotation. It was 'men only' in the scene shop where I listened to male balladeers like James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot while unhappily working off assigned crew hours. Jazz classes (my favorites) in the dance department were conducted to the pre-disco sounds of Isaac Hayes and the Temptations. And late night cast parties were never complete without spins of Bette Midler's first two albums.
