Porchlight Music Theatre has announced its spring special events for 2013. The ICONS Gala, Celebrating the Art of Bob Fosse, takes place Sunday, April 7, 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Moulin Rouge Room at The Fairmont Hotel, 200 N. Columbus Dr. The ICONS Gala includes performances from iconic Fosse works and the presentation of the 2013 Guy Adkins Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Music Theatre in Chicago to one of Chicago's music masters, Doug Peck. Chicago Sings Kander and Ebb, takes place Monday, May 20 at 7 p.m. at the Mayne Stage, 1328 W. Today in 1966, Sweet Charity opened at the Palace Theatre, where it ran for 608 performances. Featuring music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon, the musical was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse starring his wife and muse Gwen Verdon. It is based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for Nights of Cabiria. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and also ran in the West End as well as having revivals and international productions.

FSPA Students Experience Broadway with Master Classes, NEWSIES and More

Musical theater students from the Franklin School for the Performing Arts (FSPA) traveled to New York City on January 18-21 to hone their craft and take master classes with Broadway artists. The customized weekend program was offered to FSPA by Broadway Artists Alliance (BAA) of New York City. Classes were held at Ripley-Grier Studios, where many Broadway shows audition and rehearse. The memorable weekend featured a performance of Broadway's hit Tony Award-winning musical Newsies, including a special opportunity to meet and talk afterwards with members of the cast. Students also enjoyed a special reception with FSPA alumni currently living and working in New York City.
