BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Is a Wish Come True for Fans of Both Theatre and Film
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 19, 2014

For many musical theatre fans, a beloved Broadway musical, fairly faithfully, adapted into a stunning big screen success, is their most treasured of Christmas wishes. In recent years, however, the holidays have brought us near misses (LES MISERABLES), underwhelming disappointments (RENT), and outright abominations (NINE). However, Disney's INTO THE WOODS, opening nationwide on Christmas Day, is those musical theatre fans' wish fulfilled. With a cast of Hollywood A-listers and Broadway alums, all of whom prove more than capable of handling Stephen Sondheim's uniquely intricate and intellectual music and lyrics, this very well might be the most effectively adapted movie musical of the past half century. The lush orchestrations, the gorgeous settings, and the spectacular cast had a smile plastered on my face from the film's first note until its last.

BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS is a Phenomenal Adaptation of the Classic Stephen Sondheim Musical
by Alan Henry - Dec 19, 2014

It's no surprise Walt Disney Pictures has decided to bank on the popularity of the movie musical following the box office success of Les Miserables - what is a surprise is how successfully they've done so. Their first foray into the live-action movie musical, Into the Woods is everything you'd want from a movie musical - but doesn't compromise any of the brilliance of the original even if some modifications were made to fit the medium.

Since opening on Broadway in 1987, Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods has become a musical theatre staple, having been performed in venues big and small all over the world. Though much of the musical is based on the stories that we heard at bedtime, many of the tales have been altered [spoiler alert!] to create a cohesive plot. In anticipation of Disney's upcoming big screen version of the musical, which hits theatres on Christmas day, BroadwayWorld is traveling back to 'Once Upon a Time' to take a closer look at the original fairy tale characters, and how some of their fates differ in Into the Woods!
