BWW Interviews: Talking Marriage and Mamet with Alan Campbell and Lauren Kennedy

It was recently my great pleasure to sit down and talk with Lauren Kennedy and Alan Campbell, of Hot Summer Nights | Theatre Raleigh, about their current production of Race, and their unique creative relationship for the production. The two are married, and this was the first time that Alan has acted in a play which Lauren directed. The two discussed how they met, how they keep their talent crushes alive, and how they worked together to create this emotionally-charged piece of theater.

Marking the first time that actor/director Lauren Kennedy has directed her Tony-nominated husband Alan Campbell in a play, Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy in downtown Raleigh is currently featuring Race, a play by contemporary American playwright David Mamet. Race is the third show of the season, and is one which certainly does not shy away from controversial topics.

The touching new play 'Spring at the WIllowbrook Inn' by Jonathan Van Dyke and Douglas C. Evans, will make it's NY premiere as part of The Fresh Fruit Festival July 26-29. 'Spring at the Willowbrook Inn' follows the lives of Cooper Stanwyk and Joshua Hill from their first meeting in 1967 at a motivational conference. This unlikely pair develop a deep relationship based on mutual understanding and love as their lives unfold separately. Through correspondence and decades of meeting at the Willowbrook they become a pivotal role in each others lives, supporting each other through the unpredictabilities each one faces.

The Festival welcomes avant-garde Toronto theatre company VideoCabaret's spectacular production The War of 1812 (The History of the Village of the Small Huts: 1812-1815) as part of its 60th season. The show, which has been programmed to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of the War of 1812, begins previews at the Studio Theatre Annex performance space on June 26.
