Charlie Haden Quartet Celebrates Anniversary with SOPHISTICATED LADIES, 3/22
by BWW News Desk - Mar 22, 2011

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Charlie Haden's Quartet West has been championed as one of jazz's most compelling bands. Their new and seventh recording, Sophisticated Ladies, opens the latest chapter in Quartet West's historic career. With Sophisticated Ladies, bassist and bandleader Charlie Haden brings to light lesser-known tunes delivered with refined improvisations that are equal parts romantic, classy, elegant and alluring. The core group of Haden (bass), Alan Broadbent (piano/orchestral string arrangements), Ernie Watts (tenor saxophone), and Rodney Green (drums) have an impressive cast of new collaborators on this album: six of contemporary music's top-tier vocalists, including Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Melody Gardot, Norah Jones, Renée Fleming and Ruth Cameron. Sophisticated Ladies will be released everywhere March 22nd on Emarcy/Decca.

The distinctive qualities that make California a sympathetic refuge for creative renegades - from its unique landscapes that have inspired numerous masterpieces to the juxtaposed attitudes of the state's northern and southern regions - are all explored musically in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's West Coast, Left Coast festival. Curated by the LA Phil's new Creative Chair, John Adams, the unprecedented three-week multi-disciplinary series of events acknowledges the West Coast's, particularly California's, distinct musical culture and attempts to answer the questions - how did this come about and what does it all mean? In focusing on California as a land of possibility, the varied events that make up the festival provide attendees an opportunity to immerse themselves completely in music from many sources, as well as in symposia, film screenings and other events, all focusing on the West Coast philosophy.

Canadian Jazz Vocalist/Pianist Diana Krall Begins A New Tour
by Gabrielle Sierra - Jan 23, 2009

After nearly five years away from Canadian concert stages, Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist and pianist Diana Krall returns with a new tour in celebration and in support of her new Verve CD Quiet Nights, to be released in late March. To fully showcase the sumptuous arrangements of Claus Ogerman on both Quiet Nights and Krall's material from Look of Love and When I Look in Your Eyes, Ms. Krall will be accompanied in concert by her usual sidemen Anthony Wilson (guitars), Jeff Hamilton (drums), John Clayton (bass) plus a 45-piece orchestra under the direction of conductor Alan Broadbent. Influenced greatly by her many tour performances in Brazil, Ms. Krall refers to her new work as 'not coy, like Peel Me a Grape, but womanly - like you're lying in bed next to your lover and whispering this in his ear.' From Krall's refreshing version of 'Where or When', to an utterly soul-stirring rendition of 'You're My Thrill' the ten songs on Quiet Nights are disarming in their intimacy, as the music pushes unabashedly into the realm of sweet surrender. As Krall puts it, 'It's a sensual, downright erotic record, and it's intended to be that way.' Two dollars for every ticket sold to the Diana Krall 'Quiet Nights' World Tour 2009 will be proudly donated to the Heart and Stroke Foundation's 'The Heart Truth' campaign, with special thanks to founding sponsor, Becel.
