American Modern Ensemble Performs Vocal Music Of Robert Paterson, 4/26

The upcoming April 26 concert by American Modern Ensemble represents two firsts: it is the ensemble's first concert at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall (or any of the Carnegie halls) in its 13-year history, and it is the first program devoted completely to the vocal works of composer and AME founder Robert Paterson (and the second all-Paterson program). About the program, which features six works for voice and piano, including three world premieres, Paterson says, "The texts are wildly diverse, and include poems constructed from reCAPTCHA texts (those texts you type online to prove that you're human), songs about the life of baseball catcher Mike Piazza, online dating, and settings of poems by W. H. Auden, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Richard Wilbur, William Carlos Williams, Sara Teasdale, David Cote (my collaborator on the opera Three Way), and others."

American Modern Recordings to Release The Original Nashville Opera Cast Recording Of THREE WAY

On November 17, 2017, American Modern Recordings will release the world premiere recording of Robert Paterson's Three Way, a 'titillating and clever' (Time Out New York) trio of one-act operas for eight singers and chamber orchestra. Exploring the possible future and the eternal questions of love, sex, and need with Robert Paterson's strikingly sonorous ensemble writing (Opera magazine) and David Cote's witty, perceptive libretto (New York Observer), Three Way is clearly the kind of three way worth having (Parterre Box). Co-produced by Nashville Opera and American Opera Projects, the work received its world premiere January 27-29, 2017, in Nashville, and its New York premiere June 15-18 at BAM.

BWW Review: CAROUSEL at Union Avenue Opera

The Union Avenue Opera is so good at fulfilling our expectations - our expectations of really fine traditional opera. But once in a while they enjoy surprising us, jerking us out of that normal path. For instance, with 'Trouble in Tahiti' several years ago the orchestra was a jazz trio. Now this splendid little company surprises us again with a lovely production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1945 Broadway classic, Carousel. It's the familiar story of a young mill-worker who makes the tragic mistake of falling in love with a rough but beautiful carnival barker.

BWW Review: THREE WAY Makes Sex Last Too Long at BAM

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, there lived a place called Broadway, where you could find still find bills of one-act plays that, more often than not, offered titillation into then-current sexual practices and innovations. Zoom forward 40 years or so and opera has finally caught up with this oh-so-shocking (but-not-really) form of entertainment, with the local premiere of THREE WAY by Robert Paterson and David Cote, directed by John Hoomes.
