Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Jelani graduated from Ithaca College in upstate New York with a BFA in Acting in 2016. Following graduation, Jelani moved to Chicago where he has performed in many productions throughout the city, including "Topdog/Underdog" (Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre) in which he won a Black Theatre Alliance Award for Best Actor in an Ensemble.

Simmons, Jr. has announced that he will be stepping down from his position at Civic Ensemble, an ensemble-based, community driven theater company founded in 2012. After seven years with Civic Ensemble, Simmons will depart in December to become Artistic Director of HartBeat Ensemble in Hartford, CT. HartBeat is one of Hartford's most important cultural institutions, dedicated to creating provocative theater that connects to the community beyond the traditional barriers of class, race, geography and gender.
William Shakespeare's King Lear is TAM's Shakespeare in Maine Communities offering for 2018. King Lear will tour for three weeks to schools and community centers across the state from October 9-26 and run for one weekend only in Cumston Hall October 12 through 14. TAM's production is part of Shakespeare in American Communities, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The Shakespeare in Maine Communities tour is also funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission and the Betterment Foundation.
