“A man walks into a bar…” and anything can happen. As Dietz says, “Stories are bigger at a bar…the biggest story wins.”

A stranger walks into a crumbling tavern in New York City, in a building about to be demolished, and the young owner and his fiancée find themselves caught up in the mystery, surely the conspiracy, behind the horrible events of 9/11. Ray, an old family friend who lives in the empty hotel rooms above the bar (if he lives anywhere), both grounds the story and invokes ghosts to listen.

Set in 2006, Steven Dietz's acclaimed dramatic thriller is a “fierce, funny, and ultimately mind-bending work of theatrical power that grips you until the final word. What you don't know can hurt you.”

From reviews of productions of the play: Dietz is a master of smart dialogue and wily storytelling. He draws us in with characters that intrigue, but the stories they spin can do a number on our beliefs and leave us shattered.… You'll be scared by the intimations of Act One. You'll be moved by the awful events of Act Two. And when the terrible day is discussed, you will hear the millennium's fresh ghosts rattling through the walls of the theater…and feel their unhappy gaze beaming from the tavern's smudged, stained-glass windows. “The play isn't really about what did or didn't happen; it's about the agony of uncertainty. The play's lightning flashes come from Dietz's insights into Americans' obsession with conspiracies.

Needed: 4 actors (ages given are “read-as” ages, not necessarily calendar ages):

Adam: a graduate student, late twenties-mid thirties. He has inherited the bar from his father. He is also working on a dissertation that has to do with 9/11.
Janet: Adam’s fiancée, late twenties-early thirties. She met him in graduate school.
Ray: a resident of the bar, sixties. He is a father figure, but more important he is a New Yorker, with all that means.
Palmer: a man, forties. No other identification is offered, but what he has to say suggests, what? FBI? CIA? Blackstone? Other?

Audition will involve reading from the script. Casting is to ensemble.

Production dates: April 13 – 29, 2018 (10 performances, including 3 Sundaymatinees and one Thursday evening performance). Rehearsals will begin as soon as roles are cast.
