Come out and audition for the final slot in the Basement Season!
THE NETHER

Audition Date: Sunday, November 1st, from 6 pm - 9 pm in the Small Classroom in the Walgreen Drama Center
Performance Dates: December 3rd, 4th, and 5th
Rehearsal Dates: November 2nd - December 2nd (excluding Thanksgiving Break)
Conflicts with: Arabian Nights, Henry IV, The Light in the Piazza, The Pillowman, and Stitches
The Play's Synopsis:
The Nether takes place in the near future in which the internet -- now called the Nether -- has expanded to a fully immersive virtual reality in which users can login and manufacture their own realms. The action of the play follows Detective Morris, a police inspector who has taken on an investigation of a disturbing and frighteningly real realm in which users are logging in to live out their darkest fantasies on virtual children. As Morris uncovers more and more about this dark world, lines of morality and consequence become blurred all the way until the play's climactic and startling conclusion. Awarded the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2012, The Nether dares to ask tough questions about the power of thought, the danger of human desire, and the boundaries of reality.
Character Breakdown:
SIMS/PAPA, a successful businessman in the world of the Nether; a man who has found his own code of morality and is content to live by it even in the face of judgment
MORRIS, a strong-willed, vigilante detective with an unwavering sense of her own morals
DOYLE, a nervous and broken middle-aged science teacher who has decided to cross-over to live permanently in the Nether
IRIS, a young girl who touches the lives of everyone she meets; she is quickly learning the boundaries of own obedience
WOODNUT, a conflicted young man and a newcomer to the perils and joys of the Nether
Preparation:
Please prepare a 1-2 minute dramatic monologue.

From the director: I would love to see everyone who is available come out to audition! This is an INCREDIBLE and challenging play and one I am very, very excited to explore and bring to life with a cast. I will be sending out an attachment of the script in the next couple days; I strongly encourage those who are considering auditioning to read it. I want an ensemble of actors who are enthusiastic and committed to this piece!
