Audition Announcement

Our Town

SHOW: Our Town. 20 adult and 10 child actors are needed for this Pulitzer prize winning drama.

OUR TOWN: Pulitzer-Prize winning Our Town is an American stage treasure that presents a timeless commentary on the transience of human existence. The play reveals the ordinary lives of the people in small town America at the turn of the 20th century. We follow two families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually—in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre—die.

“Probably the finest play ever written by an American.” —Edward Albee

“Thornton Wilder's masterpiece...An immortal tale of small town morality [and]...a classic of soft spoken theater.” — The New York Times

CHARITY READERS THEATRE: 100% of all ticket sales are donated to charity. Charity Readers Theatre, presented by Beijing Playhouse Drama Club, is all about acting, acting, acting. There are almost no costumes, no props, no sets, no lighting design, no sound design, no subtitles. It’s all acting. And as it is readers theatre, actors with large parts will not be required to completely memorize their lines. The show will be performed—not simply read. But the actors with larger parts will be allowed to carry scripts to refer to.

Beijing Playhouse’s main stage shows take more than two months to rehearse and perform for almost one month—a three month process. Charity Readers Theatre rehearses for only one week. And at the end of that week, we do one performance only. It’s a show in a week. While the commitment is much less, one week as opposed to three months, that will be one extremely intense week. Actors who are cast will live and breathe this show for that week.

AUDITION DATE: Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 10:30 am.

LOCATION: Charity Readers Theatre’s auditions and rehearsals for Our Town are at #2 Middle School Attached to Beijing Normal University—a 15 minute walk north of the Jishuitan subway station. (Directions available on request.) The one performance is at Beijing City International School—a 15 walk south of the Dawanaglu subway station.

ROLE(S): All 30 roles open. Ability to perform in English is required; but English as a native language is not required. Although this show is readers theatre, it will be performed—not just read. Auditions are open and anyone can come. We love discovering new talent. We request that interested actors complete the Actor Audition Form in advance. It helps the directors. (Request one and we’ll send it to you.) We’re looking for 5 boys, age 6-17; 8 men, age 18-60; 2 men, age 60-80, 5 girls, age 6-17; 8 women, age 18-60; 2 women, age 60-80.

AUDITION FORMAT: You'll do a live reading from the script and will perform scenes from the show with other actors. Monologues are optional and encouraged but not necessary. If you are non-native English speaker, we strongly suggest bringing a memorized 60 second English language monologue. (Call backs, which will be necessary, are Sunday, November 3 at 2:30 pm.)

PAY: This is volunteer fun. 100% of all revenue is donated to charity.

PERFORMANCE DATE: CRT’s one performance is Saturday, November 9 at 7:30 pm. Rehearsals are evenings at 6:30 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm in the week of November 3-9, 2013.
