Philadelphia’s renowned summer theater program Upper Darby Summer Stage is seeking actors ages 18-28 for their 40th season summer production of Mary Poppins. Marcus Stevens is directing, Gina Giachero is Musical Director and Choreography is by Abby Shunskis Dietzler and Kevin Dietzler. Rehearsals begin June 8 and run Monday thru Thursday evenings, 7 pm to 10:30 pm. Tech days will be Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. The week of July 27, rehearsals will go from 6 to 11pm. Performances are July 31 at 7:30pm, August 1 at 1:30pm and 7:30pm, August 7 at 7:30pm, and August 8 at 1:30pm and 7:30pm. Song Selection: Mary Poppins has a very traditional musical theater score. Please prepare 16-32 bars of a traditional Broadway song. No pop, rock or contemporary musical theater. Dance Component: There will be a dance portion to the audition so please come prepared with clothes, tap shoes (if you tap), water, etc. While Mary Poppins is a dance-heavy show, there are lots of roles for actors who simply move well. Do your best and you will be placed in the show accordingly. We can always arrange for an alternate time or have you send a video submission. Mary Poppins Character Breakdown: Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way. Must have a terrific legit soprano, and be a strong actor and dancer. Bert, our mysterious and charming narrator. A true song and dance man. The Family: Georg e Banks, Father, Banker, Sovereign of Cherry Tree Lane. A complex role for a great actor. He talk/sings his songs very much like Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady. Winifred Banks, his wife, mother of Jane and Michael. Sings “Being Mrs. Banks.” She is smart and warm, but very insecure about her abilities as a wife and mother. Jane and Michael Banks, The son and daughter of George and Winnifred. These roles will be filled by actors from the Rising Stars/Children’s Theater programs. The Servants: Katie Nanna, a huffy nanny. Replaced by Mary Poppins Mrs. Brill, she runs the Banks household. Curmudgeonly, but well intentioned. Small solos throughout. Robertson Ay, the houseboy. Friendly and eager, but dimwitted. Small solos throughout. Friends and Neighbors: Admiral Boom, Lives next door. An eccentric retired seafarer. Miss Lark, Lives next door. Spends all her time with her dog, Willoughb Policeman, a policeman Park Keeper, a park keeper. Magical Characters: Neleus, a statue in the park that comes to life. Must be a terrific dancer and singer. Sings “It’s a Jolly Holiday with Mary.” Bird Woman, the mysterious woman on the cathedral steps. Sings “Feed the Birds.” Mrs. Corry, runs a magical conversation shop in the park. Sings “Supercalifragalistic” Fannie and Annie, Mrs. Corry’s daughters Valentine, Jane’s doll that comes to life. Must be a terrific dancer and singer. Sings “Playing the Game.” Bankers and Business People: Bank Chairman, formidable Miss Smythe, an employee at the bank Von Hussler, a corrupt German Businessman Northbrook, an honest English Businessman Mrs. Andrews: George's Nanny from when he was a boy.
