SEEKING: Non-equity Actors for La Maupin, a new musical about Julie d’Aubigny going up in this summer’s NYC Fresh Fruit Festival. Will have three performances between July 10-23rd, with rehearsals beginning the week of June 12th.

SHOW INFO: Julie d'Aubigny. Swordswoman. Opera Singer. Rogue. Notorious bisexual. In La Maupin this creature of legend lives again, in a fast-paced musical adventure. At her peak, Julie was a force to be reckoned with - bashing bigots, tumbling chambermaids, and taking on some of Opera's most iconic roles, from Pallas Athena to Dido. But under the legend there is a woman before her time. A woman trying to navigate an austere world that never quite made sense to her. Accounts vary; was she a lunatic or a martyr? A hero or a cautionary tale? Only one fact goes undisputed about Julie d'Aubigny, La Maupin: She is a legend.

COMPENSATION: This is a non-equity production. Actors will be provided a $150 stipend to help offset travel costs.

Casting for the following eight roles:

JULIE D’AUBIGNY - operatic mezzo with belt (G3 - G5), F, 18-25, any ethnicity. Hot tempered, passionate, and courageous, Julie is a force to be reckoned with. She is a fierce fighter who handles most problems by stabbing them in the face. Quick to challenge and anger, but loyal and generous with her friends. Enjoys drinking games, bawdy songs, and tumbling chambermaids.

MARQUISE DE FLORENSAC - mezzo soprano (Bb3 - F5), F, in her twenties, any ethnicity. Light doubling as minor characters. Florensac is a woman who can navigate high society with ease. Underneath a more proper façade, she is mischievous, driven, and very upfront about her feelings. Infinitely kind, with a rough-and-tumble spirit.

LA ROCHOIS - operatic soprano (C4 - A5), F, age flexible, any ethnicity. A role which requires doubling as other characters. Rochois is the star soprano of the Paris Opera. She is grace, dignity, and eloquence – to the point of sometimes being intimidating. She is deeply devoted to her art, and not much else.

BRIGITTE - alto (G3 - C5), F, early twenties, any ethnicity. A role which requires doubling as other characters. Extremely blunt and direct. A risk-taker. Trusting, compassionate, with a deep ability to love.

FANCHON MOREAU - alto (B3 - C#5), F, in her twenties, any ethnicity. A role which requires significant doubling as other characters. A prominent figure in the Paris Opera. Kind to the point of being fake, she’s a bit of a gossip.

COMTE JOSEPH D’ALBERT - non-singing role, M, early twenties, any ethnicity. A role which requires doubling as other characters. A man with a roguish charm and quick wit, but his wagging tongue often gets him into trouble before he realizes what he’s said. From upper society, but prefers a more adventurous life. Generous, bold, and athletic.

GABRIEL THEVENARD - bass-baritone (A2- E4), M, in his twenties, any ethnicity. A role which requires doubling as other characters. Thoughtful, gentle, with a serious passion he follows through all else. Once his dream is achieved he tends towards being pompous and a bit full of himself, but always with a good heart underneath.

COMTE D’ARMAGNAC – tenor (D3 - G4), M, age flexible, any ethnicity. A role which requires significant doubling as other characters. A man who is easily swayed but genuinely wants the best for those around him.

*We will always cast based on talent alone and not race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity etc. For this call we are particularly interested in actors who have some fight choreography experience, or are eager to learn and be a part of a physical show.
