BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS - Theater J

Theater J seeks young actors from across the DC metro region to audition for Brighton Beach Memoirs, the timeless coming of age comedy by Neil Simon which runs April 5 through May 7, 2017 at Theater J. Open auditions will be held from 12:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday, November 6 at McLean High School (McLean, VA), from 12:00 -4:00 PM on Sunday, November 20 at The ATMTC Academy (Rockville, MD), and from 12:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday, December 4 at Theater J (Washington, DC). All interested actors ages 12-18 are encouraged to audition.

Theater J is casting four teenage actors to play the pivotal roles of:

Eugene Morris Jerome, 15 year old narrator of the story, almost as passionate about writing as he is about baseball, he has recently discovered girls in a big way;

Nora Morton, Eugene’s beautiful 16 year old cousin who dreams of dancing on Broadway and is resentful of her mother’s constant attention to her younger sister Laurie;

Laurie Morton, 13 years old, Nora’s younger sister who is pampered due to heart flutter, she appears innocent, but has a grasp on what those around her are up to;

Stanley Jerome, 18 years old, Eugene’s older brother, works in a factory instead of attending college without complaint, struggles with listening to his own heart and doing what his family needs.

Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, New York during the Great Depression, Eugene is your average Polish-Jewish American teenager trying to navigate the challenges of puberty, sexual awakening, and a search for identity. Eugene’s witty commentary about his life, his overworked father, his overbearing mother, his overconfident brother, and his overly gorgeous cousin, makes this tender coming-of-age journey both poignant and joyful.

Theater J’s production will be directed by Matt Torney, Studio Theatre’s Associate Artistic Director. DC theater veterans, Susan Rome, Michael Glenn, and Lise Bruneau have already been cast in this production and the four young actors will round out the cast. This is a unique educational learning experience at a professional regional theater.

In partnership with local schools and area arts organizations, Theater J’s Associate Producer and Broadway actor, Jonathan David Martin (Warhorse) will lead information sessions about auditions and the production at the following dates and locations:

Wednesday, October 5, 7-8 PM, Mclean High School, Black Box Theatre

Thursday, October 13, 6-7 PM, The ATMTC Academy

Thursday, October 27, 6-7 PM, Woodrow Wilson High School, Black Box Theatre
