Jake was born in the small kampong of Setapak in KL, the 2nd youngest of 10 children. From his youngest days he recalls staring intently, endlessly at the sky. He’d watch cloud formations and as the sky would pass from late afternoon into night, he’d note the slowly dawning sprinkling of stars taking over. Stars and clouds were wholly independent parts of the sky and each element was strikingly constructed and stood out to him on its own. Despite his youth he was aware that his imagination was being vividly stoked.Jake has an innate sense of conceptualising components of a subject or theme.
He can take a landscape, someone’s face, or a social interaction and then be able to transfer all these components onto his canvas highlighting the glittering singularity of one piece with the whole. This combined with startling, sharp bursts of vividly staggering colours, the use of bright whites, and his mastery of the impasto technique working with mounds of oils giving a deep multi-textural style, have been his signature.
