These two romantic favourites, Brahms's Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony, were composed just a few years apart in the late nineteenth century. Each is a powerful and profoundly moving musical experience. Brahms's concerto is widely regarded as one of the two greatest ever written for the violin (Beethoven's is the other), while Tchaikovsky's hyperemotional symphony exudes dark colors, melancholic themes, fiercely defiant outbursts and poignant dissonances.
