The Big Snake or How I Got Eaten Alive on National Television and Lived To Tell About It! Written & Directed by Tom Cavanaugh

Hollywood, CA (June, 2016) – The World Premiere production of The Big Snake or How I Got Eaten Alive On National Television and Lived To Tell About It! at The Complex as part of The 2016 Hollywood Fringe Festival in the Ruby Theatre, June 2, 11, 17, 19 & 24th, 2016. The play is written and directed by Tom Cavanaugh.
The Big Snake or How I Got Eaten Alive on National Television and Lived To Tell About It! is an American farce that tells the story of a reality television show producer that creates a live television show that feeds a man to a giant Anaconda snake. The play examines the entertainment value of reality television, theatre, and media in an ever changing world. A “play within a play”, this light hearted comedy brings the audience through an examination of media that is conducted by characters from the world of theatre that have come to see a live stage show, but end up on a comical, roller coaster ride of TV Production, Hollywood, Live Theatre and of course “a little romance!”. Inspired by the works of Pirandello and the French full length play, Jocko ou le Singe du Bresil (Jocko or the Monkey of Brazil) by Edmond Rochefort, The style of The Big Snake or How I Got Eaten Alive On National Television and Lived To Tell About It! is inspired by live media, stage as well as television, but the content, “the snake part” is actually based on reality! In 2014, a reality television event aired live and earned the title “The Craziest Reality Show Ever!” Cavanaugh watched the entire country respond to “the snake show” as it was being talked about on television and radio shows from L.A. to New York and thought “This would make a great Fringe show!”
Tom Cavanaugh is a graduate of The Actors Studio Drama School where he received his M.F.A. in Playwriting. His plays include Behold, which won the 2011 Pickering Award for Excellence in Playwriting and was a finalist at The New American Playwrights Development Program at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in the summer of 2011; Adam & Yoshi that won the Make the House Roar Prize for Comedic Plays from the Lionheart Theatre of Georgia in 2013, and was also a finalist at The New American Playwrights Development Program at the Utah Shakespeare Festival in 2013. Cavanaugh’s full length play, Inland Empress had its professional debut on January 23rd, 2016 at The Lounge Theatre in Hollywood. Inland Empress was directed by award winner, Jessica Hanna, starred an award winning ensemble cast and was the producing debut of a new company, The Mutant Collective (Monica Martin, Victoria Watson & Jeffrey Wylie). Cavanaugh received his professional directing debut with a production of How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying at The Bucks County Playhouse, the State Theatre of Pennsylvania back in 1999 after twelve years of being an award winning high school and Community Theatre director. Cavanaugh is currently a playwriting member of The Fierce Backbone Theatre Company in Hollywood and a writer in Bobby Moresco’s Actors Gym at the Whitefire Theatre in Sherman Oaks, CA.
