Bad-tempered brothers Valene and Coleman return from their father’s funeral and immediately fall into their usual maddening pattern of bickering and back-stabbing. Valene tends to his collection of plastic saints and refuses to share his supply of liquor and potato chips (crisps) with his penniless brother. It will presently emerge that Dad’s cause of death was a shotgun blast from Coleman after Dad disparaged his haircut. To keep Valene quiet, Coleman signed over his share of the inheritance. Valene spends it on a brand new stove, even though he can’t cook. Not to worry, Coleman uses it to melts his brother’s saints. Father Welsh, an idealistic young priest, tries valiantly to save the souls of the battling brothers, but ends up drowning himself in despair. Yes, it’s the dead-end world of provincial Ireland, populated by hopeless losers and drunks – all vibrantly human and savagely hilarious.
