The legendary Kathak maestro Pt. Birju Maharaj and exponent Ms. Saswati Sen have chosen Peacock blue and amber the two colours dear to Lord Krishna for their evening.
Pt. Birju Maharaj gave Kathak dance a new dimension by developing his own unique style and popularized this classical dance of North India all over the world. He has won several honours and awards, the highest being the Padma Vibhushan and the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award. His talent, dedication, innovation, training, repertoire and performances have earned him the status of a living legend of Kathak in India.
His long time associate and senior student Saswati Sen is the proud recipient of the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2004-5 and also the Sanskriti Award, the Shringar Mani Award and the Critic’s Recommendation Award. Saswati today is regarded as an artist with immense versatility and talent and one of the best exponents of the famed Lucknow gharana. Along with Maharaj ji she has trained a large number of students, many from overseas. She has acquired the true style of her mentor and incorporates into her own presentation both the lyrical grace and rhythmic virtuosity of kathak. However, her forte is abhinaya which has always received high appreciation.
