One of the most complex mythological heroes, Orpheus was able to manipulate the order of Nature with his lyre. He could also charm the guards of the Underworld, where he descended in search of his dead love Eurydice. However, he was unable to fulfil the condition for bringing his beloved back to the land of the living, failing to stop himself from looking back at Eurydice as they made their way back up from the Underworld. Was he unsure whether Eurydice was following him? Or was he impatient with desire? What manly virtue did the famous musician lack? The ballet music of Stravinsky portrays the artist’s journey to hell in an ethereal musical setting.
In the story of The Wooden Prince by Béla Balázs, the love of two young people can be consummated only after serious obstacles have been overcome. Through the enchantment of the Fairy, their path is obstructed by the forces of Nature, which keep them apart until they are freed from the false formalities that conceal their true worth. This moral story, in which the purest ideal of love can be reached only by looking painfully deep into ourselves, is elevated to a philosophical level by the music of Béla Bartók.
