The newest creation of the brilliant minds behind Elizabeth and Mozart! is an exceptional musical about intrigue, revolution and love. The infamous necklace scandal, which is often seen as one of the factors leading to the French Revolution, is brought to life through the story of the titular unhappy queen, and a young woman from the slums of Paris, Margrid Arnaud. While one of them flirts and dances in the palace, a symbol of feminine beauty and charm, the other lives in wretched poverty, but due to the political machinations of Prince Orléans, their fates are tied together. They both fall desperately in love with the Swedish count, Axel von Fersen, but Marie Antoinette's life ends underneath the guillotine's blade, while Margrid is put on a pedestal as a revolutionary heroine. These events change both of them drastically, and as they discover that they are half-sisters, we can follow the joys, sorrows and doubts of two extraordinary women. This turbulent story shows us images of both the stunning halls of 18th century France and the wretched dens of deprivation. Silvester Levay draws inspiration from the revolutionary fervour of the crowd, the indecisive weakness of the king and the unbelievable power of the press to craft dramatic and lyrical melodies for this story full of timeless conflicts.
