Kumu Kahua Theatre Hosts New Playwriting Workshop Today

Kumu Kahua Theatre will be offering a playwriting class for adults with playwright Tammy Haili'pua Baker, beginning today, June 1, 2014. This class is designed for writers who have already created a draft script.

Playwriting Workshop II: Revising That Draft

This workshop is designed for those who have a draft of a play that they want to take to the next level. Each session will focus on key elements of play development to transform a draft into a stageable play.

Kumu Kahua Theatre exists to encourage local playwrights, produce work of local playwrights and/or plays dealing with some aspect of local culture, and to develop theatre artists and the audiences who appreciate this work.

As a playwright/director Tammy Haili'pua Baker's work centers on the development of an indigenous Hawaiian theatre aesthetic and form. Her work also focuses on the revitalization of Hawaiian language and culture, covering the use of theatre as a tool for language learning, the empowerment of cultural identity through stage performance, and the works of Ka H'lau Hanakeaka, a Hawaiian medium theatre troupe she co-founded. Ka H?lau Hanakeaka?s productions have toured internationally and throughout the Hawaiian archipelago. In addition to her Hawaiian medium plays Baker?s English and Pidgin (Hawaiian Creole English) plays have been produced at various theatres in Hawai?i. In the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Hawai?i at M?noa she oversees the MFA Playwriting program and is currently developing curriculum for the new Hawaiian Theatre program.

The class will be held at at the Inkubator loft space, 501 Sumner Street. Enrolled students will receive complete directions to the classroom. The use of this space was arranged in part by Charisma Industries.

All classes will take place from 9:00am to noon, on Sundays, June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 2014. Enrollment will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis.
