Equity actors and actor/singers for various principal roles in the 2016-17 Season.

Preparation
Prepare either:

1) a short monologue and 16 bars of a song in a style of one of the shows from the season; OR

2) two contrasting monologues

Total audition time should not exceed 2 minutes.

If singing, bring sheet music; accompanist provided.
Bring picture and resume

Bernadette
Male Lead, 40’s-60’s. Dance, singing and lip-synching ability essential; quietly dignified transsexual who must be convincing as an older woman who was once the star performer of ‘Les Girls’; mother of the group; glamorous, oozes Old Hollywood charm with rapier wit and sensitivity. (baritone-tenor)

Mitzi/Tick
Male Lead, 30’s-early 40’s. Dance, singing and lip-synching ability essential; with an unremarkable and essentially straight exterior, Tick is a discontented drag queen, the best in the business; his journey from disillusionment to fulfillment through being reunited with his son is the central core of the story (baritone-tenor)

Felicia/Adam
Male Lead, 20’s. Outstanding dance, singing and lip-synching ability essential; well built, flashy, young drag queen and born performer with a more than occasional bitchy streak. (tenor)

Bob
Male Lead- 40’s- 50’s. Strong acting ability with one song; a mechanic; manly, soft hearted Aussie bloke; has a fascination with Bernadette whom he saw perform in ‘Les Girls’ in Sydney more than twenty years ago. (baritone- character singer)

Benji
Boy age 7-11. Son of Tick and his estranged wife, Marion; Marion has raised Benji to be a sweet and open-minded young boy who is supportive of his Father’s lifestyle; requires a good actor who sings.

Male. 24-year-old owner of De La Vega's Bodega, his parents emigrated from the Dominican Republic and have since passed away; he lives with Abuela Glaudia who isn't actually his grandmother but they are as close as family; Usnavi is in love with Vanessa and remains the eyes and ears of Washington Heights neighborhood; strong actor, must be an excellent rapper and good mover; singing a plus.

Nina Rosario
Female, 18-24, any ethnicity. Freshman at Stanford University, very bright, sweet, feels that she has let everyone down because she’s dropping out of college: high belter (to F5).

Camilia Rosario
Female, 40-49, any ethnicity. The co-owner of Rosario Car and Limousine with her husband Kevin; also from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, she fell in love with Kevin at 19 and immigrated with him to New York City; she is cool-headed yet keeps a subtle but strong leash on Kevin; her daughter Nina has just returned for the summer from her first year at Stanford; singing actor who moves well.

Kevin Rosario
Male, 40-49, any ethnicity. Nina’s dad, co-owner of Rosario’s Car and Limosine, strong actor, dreaming through Nina; singer, baritone (to E4); no required dancing.

Benny
Male, any ethnicity. Now a 24-year-old cab driver for Rosario Car and Limousine, he once was a street punk and hoodlum, often finding himself in trouble; Kevin saw promise in Benny and helped shape him into a responsible, hard-working young man; Benny has enormous respect for Kevin and sees him as a father figure; eventually falling in love with Nina, Benny sees a future for them by becoming a businessman; he and Usnavi are best friends; preferably African American; strong singer and excellent mover.

Vanessa
Female, any ethnicity. A 19-year-old shampoo girl at Daniela's Salon, Vanessa is strong, intelligent, and grew up with Benny and Usnavi; though Usnavi would like to be something more than Vanessa's friend, he has never made an attempt; Vanessa dreams of leaving to create her own life away from her alcoholic mother; very sexy; strong belt/mix to an E; must be strong dancer.

Abuela Claudia
Female, 60-69, any ethnicity. Raised Usnavi after his parents passed away and continues to live with him; she emigrated from Cuba when she was very young; of all the characters, Abuela Claudia has been in the Heights the longest; she struggled to learn English, struggled to find work, and in turn has helped others who have followed in her path; she is clearly the matriarch of the neighborhood; strong belt to a C.

Male, 20s. Actor/singer/pianist; rock & roll’s legendary piano prodigy and celebrated Last Man Standing. Must be a superb piano player, able to play like Jerry Lee Lewis; fun, energetic; comic skills a plus.

Carl Perkins
Male, 20-35, Caucasian. Actor/singer/guitar player (lead guitar); he was the American pioneer of rockabilly music and best known for his song Blue Suede Shoes; must be an excellent lead guitarist.

Johnny Cash
Male, 20-30, Caucasian. Actor/singer/guitar player to portray Johnny Cash at the dawn of his epic career; must be familiar with his music and able to play guitar; tall, should sound and look somewhat like Johnny without being an impersonator.

Sam Phillips
Male, 25-40, Caucasian. Excellent actor; Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll and founder of Sun Records who discovered Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and many others including Roy Orbison and B.B. King; a towering and charismatic figure in American music.
