Male and Female local, principal actors of all ages and ethnicities for Theatricum's 2018 (Outdoor Theatre) Summer Repertory Season: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night's Dream and Corilanus; Arthur Miller's The Crucible; The Chalk Garden by Enid Bagnold, and Haiti by William DuBois.

PREPARATION

For your audition, we ask that you prepare up to three minutes of material, either one classical or contemporary monologue, or two contrasting pieces. Prepare according to your interest in our season. Please bring 2 copies of your headshot and resume.

OTHER DATES

A Midsummer Night's Dream begins rehearsals on 4/6 and Corilanus begins rehearsals on 4/12, both perform weekday mornings throughout May, early June and again in at the end of September and early October. Weekend repertory performances run 6/2 thru 9/30. The Crucible, The Chalk Garden, and Haiti rehearse evenings in late May through July, and join the repertory performances through 9/30.

THE CRUCIBLE

John Proctor- Salem farmer forced to defend his family against witchcraft charges in court. Had a brief affair with Abigail Williams while his wife was bedridden.

Elizabeth Proctor- John Proctor’s wife. Comes to partially blame herself for her husband's unfaithfulness.

Rev. Samuel Parris- Salem's minister. A faction in his congregation is attempting to replace him. Exploits the witch trials for political gain.

Betty Parris- Daughter Rev. Parris. Accused of practicing witchcraft, which has supposedly left her catatonic.

Abigail Williams- Seventeen-year-old orphan whose parents were killed by Indians. She lives with her uncle, the Rev. Parris. In a conjuring rite in the forest, Abigail drinks rooster blood in attempt to summon spirits to kill Elizabeth Proctor.

Tituba- Black, Afro-Caribbean. Slave of the Rev. Parris. The minister brought her to Salem from Barbados, where she learned occult practices.

Thomas & Ann Putnam- Wealthy husband and wife who maneuver through carefully placed accusations of witchcraft.

Rev. John Hale- Clergyman brought in on special assignment to investigate rumors of the occult in Salem. At first convinced townspeople may be practicing witchcraft, he later defends the accused.

Rebecca Nurse- Accused of witchcraft by Ann Putnam.

Mary Warren- Eighteen-year-old servant of the Proctors who took part in the conjuring rite in the forest. Caves under pressure from Abigail to recant her testimony in court.

Deputy Governor John Danforth- Presiding judge who conducts the witch trials. Admits spectral evidence, but refuses to accept a deposition presented by John Proctor with the intent to clear Elizabeth’s name.

John Hathorne- Associate Judge presiding over the witch trials.

Giles Corey- Innocent and proud citizen accused of witchcraft. Pressed to death with heavy stones.

Mercy Lewis- Teenage servant of the Proctors who took part in the conjuring rite in the forest.

Susanna Walcott- Teenager who took part in the conjuring rite in the forest.

Sarah Good- Poor, homeless woman accused of witchcraft.

HAITI

Touissant L’Ouverture- Black. Political and military leader of revolutionary Haiti, the first freed colonial society to reject race as as a basis for social rank.

Jaques- Mixed Race. L’Ouverture’s adjutant, and later spy while the Napoleonic French occupy Haiti. A middle aged man with a permanent limp, caused by a brutal beating from his old slave master. Longs to see his adult daughter, whom he has never met.

General Christophe- Black. Military man with the velvet rage of a balked tiger. Was only a child when the Haitians first expelled the French. Eager to smash the Napoleonic incursion at the earliest opportunity.

Captain Duval- White. A hard shelled young captain in the Napoleonic incursion. Loves Odette.

Josef- White. A young, nervous and idealistic soldier in the Napoleonic incursion.

Boule- White. A hacked veteran. No longer impressed by war. Still intrigued by spoils.

Colonel Roche- White. A porcine, no-nonsense officer, who enthusiastically favors sticks over carrots.

Colonel Boucher- White. A cross between Tallyrand and Marat, a strong, cunning calculating officer, almost feline in his demeanor. Married to Odette, heir by marriage to her estate.

General Leclerc- White. Leader of the Napoleonic incursion to retake Haiti. Has the self assurance and general disdain common to all conquerors. Married to Pauline.

Odette- Mixed Race. Adventurous, excitable and charming young woman of considerable wealth and upbringing. Inspired by the liberating spirit currently gripping her native France, she would free all slaves entitled to her if they did not legally belong to her husband instead. Heiress to sizeable estate in Haiti, to which she has never been. Married to Boucher, and is unwittingly daughter to Jaques and the fair skinned daughter of his former master.

Pauline- White. Has the demeanor of a spoiled doll. Another young lady of means, but considerably fewer socially liberal convictions. Traveling companion of Odette, married to Leclerc.

Aimee- White. The rotund and long suffering maid of Pauline.

Andre- An aide and messenger in the Haitian army.

Philippe- An aide and messenger in the Napoleonic French army.

THE CHALK GARDEN

Mrs. St. Maugham- (This role has been cast, seeking strong cover) An overpowering presence, once the host and toast of London society, now aspires to a quiet and dignified retirement in the country. Lady of the house, mother to Olivia, grandmother to Laurel.

Ms. Madrigal- (This role has been cast, seeking strong cover) Reserved woman with a carefully hidden past. Governess to Laurel, whom she appears to understand better than most.

Laurel- Teenage girl with a formidable combination of wit, willfulness, resentment and pyromania. Daughter of Olivia, granddaughter of Mrs. St. Maugham.

Olivia- (This role has been cast, seeking strong cover) A tragically widowed woman, gratefully given what she would consider a second chance through remarriage. Daughter to Mrs. St. Maugham and mother to Laurel, from both of whom she lives apart.

Maitland- Officious and particular manservant and head of household staff.

Nurse- Fussy yet doting professional with singular priorities. Caretaker to the unseen Mr. Pinkbell, the former butler of the house, bedridden by a stroke.

Judge- Astute and dedicated civil servant with information regarding Ms. Madrigal.

Second Applicant- Seeking employment as a governess to Laurel. Nervous yet enthusiastic, perhaps to a fault.

Third Applicant- Seeking employment as a governess to Laurel. Keen to ascertain the social standing of the house in which she might deign to be employed.
