Breakdown

Equity actors for the roles below. In addition, TACT encourages minority actors of all ages, types, and backgrounds with strong classical training and excellent language skills to audition

TRENCH
25. Upper class British.
Has just graduated from medical school, which means he has been shut off from the world for several years. Taking this trip into the Continent is his first and last spree before heading home to face his life as a society doctor on Harley Street. He has had very little practical experience with the world, including women, and is only now attempting to learn how to deal with people. He is completely unaware that Blanche skillfully orchestrated their meeting, as directed by her father. His journey from boyhood to manhood--from innocence to being awake and aware--is the hook upon which the play is hung.

SARTORIUS
45-60. Upper class British.
A master manipulator who has built his life from the ground up. He’s learned never to tip his hand. A widower. Has raised his daughter, Blanche, as a single parent and indulges her to the extreme. A profoundly careful listener who lets nothing escape his notice. While learning to maneuver through life, he has created a gentle parental persona. Has reached a pivotal moment in his life and is determined to win at any cost, but with a well-developed poker face. His humble beginnings are never far from his thoughts and the struggle that brought him to his current comfortable life is built into his every decision.

BLANCHE
20. Upper class British.
Almost always gets what she wants, and when she doesn’t she’s a termagant. She has created a sweetly innocent and delicate façade of pink lace and curls but, underneath, is a killer--make no mistake about it. Men exist to do her bidding. So do other women. She has no friends, no interest in the needs of others and, though she may harbor a basic affection for her doting father, she’d let him drown if necessary. Nobody is more important on the planet than Blanche. She skillfully uses her tremendous charm and flashing smile as a supreme weapon.

COKANE
30-40. Upper class British.
Well-schooled but poor. Has attached himself to Trench as his companion and confident in desperate hopes for connections to a better world and life for himself. He’ll turn whichever way the wind offers the greatest promise. Over-solicitous, obsequious, eager to be perceived as a sophisticated man of the world who can fit into any social climate. He knows, in spite of it all, that he must move quickly to secure a place for himself in society before his 40s over-take him. His relative eager youthfulness has been one of his few solid commodities, and he’s crossing quickly into a chapter of life when he will no longer be a young man of promise but a middle-aged man of missed opportunities.

LICKCHEESE
45-60. Working-class British with an East-ender’s accent. Not cockney.
Barely educated, but has learned about the world from hands-on experience. In spite of the hardship of his life his heart is still open, though guarded. Fear has governed his life until resolve and determination allow a more constructive perspective with which to play the game as a winner. Like Sartorius, a widower with a daughter. Also, like Sartorius, he’s determined to win at any cost. He has learned from the best.

PARLOURMAID (ANNIE) / WAITRESS
- Waitress: 25. German (Austrian) accent. A ‘Rhine-maiden’ persona designed to serve the demanding international clientele of a very upscale hotel. She speaks several languages and, though professional and proud of her position, is brusque and ill-prepared to take any disrespect. Aware of and fascinated by the game being played by the quartet she serves.

- Annie: 25. Frail, frightened, pale. Her relationship with Blanche is bleakly unhealthy but they seem to depend upon each other. Blanche is cruel to Annie but Annie loves Blanche in spite of it. She’s also terrified to lose her position. At 25 she’s already too old to apply for a similar position in a suitable household without a reference and, if fired from the Sartorius household, she knows her options would be tragically limited.
