Breakdown

NOTE ABOUT THE PLAY: A well-regarded actress agrees to teach six inmates how to tell their stories behind the bars of a men’s maximum-security prison. Sharing intimate and sometimes hilarious details of their former lives, this unlikely group forms a bond -- even as the actress’ life outside spins out of control. And when what happens in prison doesn't stay there, no one is sure whom to trust.

Seeking:

JEFFREY, early-mid 30’s. African-American. JEFFREY is very kind and helpful, shy with a sweet smile, but possessed of a very solid core; he looks you in the eye when he shakes your hand. He might seem at first more vulnerable than the other inmates, but he possesses an inner emotional intensity, availability and strength. Actor also plays PASTOR SARAH SAWHAUSER, a Presbyterian minister with the best of intensions and a pronounced lisp or speech defect, HILARY CLINTON, and a FIVE YEAR OLD BOY.

The following roles have all been CAST.
Actors auditioning may be considered for possible replacement if needed:

BEY
Role CAST. late-30s, African-American. He can seem slow and perhaps not very smart, but he’s a thoughtful, reflective person.

FLEX
Role CAST. 30s but with the bounce and swagger of a teenager, African-American. Very physical, at times almost reptilian.

SPEEDY
Role CAST. 40, African-American. He is always bursting with creative ideas, even if he often lacks the skill to fulfill them.

SOURCE
Role CAST. mid 40s, African-American. The class sage: wise and balanced, with a real sense of who he was in his misspent youth, as opposed to who he wants to be now.

RICK
Role CAST. 30s, African-American. A recovering addict, he's been in prison for most of his adult life. Rick is a big force, big personality, big man on campus, respected for his ability.

THE VOLUNTEER
Role CAST. 40s, Caucasian. A well-regarded actress who life is falling apart, and who lacks much insight as to how she's participating in that.
