Breakdown

SUSAN HENDRIX
(Female Late 20s – Mid 30s) Blinded a few years ago in an accident, she is surviving quite well in her newly non-seeing world. Susan lives in a Greenwich Village basement apartment with her husband, Sam. She is a bit uncertain about their relationship but her ‘can-do’ attitude fills her with hope and optimism. She is an attractive, strong and independent woman, with a shrewd cleverness that is her most important ally when her world turns suddenly dangerous, uncertain and threatening. This demanding role requires a very strong actress with physical dexterity, endurance and quick instincts.

MIKE TALMAN
(Male Mid 30s – Mid 40s) A war buddy of Susan’s husband who has come to visit on a trip to New York. Mike is the kind of man who naturally inspires trust. He finds himself helping his friend’s wife but ends up involved in something far more complex and frightening than he anticipated. He seems dependable and decent: the handsome, trustworthy leading man. Or so we think. Actually, he is a master con man, and a member of a treacherous gang, bent on reclaiming a doll containing something very valuable and worth killing for. He’s having twinges of conscience—he likes Susan and isn’t sure he can follow through with the plan. Must be believable in noirish New York of 1944, and able to not only fool Susan, but he must also fool the audience.

ROAT
(Male Mid 30s – Late 40s) A mysterious and mercurial criminal from the underbelly of New York. He keeps everything about himself secret. Something has kept him out of World War II, but he mostly keeps that hidden from us. An exceptional and charismatic actor with enormous technical resources, Roat takes on several roles throughout the story, the young suffering husband dealing with a philandering wife, an older father of the same cuckolded husband, and the mysterious organizer of a plan to reclaim a doll containing something very valuable. Roat can be charming, and terrifying, and baffling by turns. At heart he is a sadist and certainly willing to kill without conscience. Need a chameleon-like actor with a facility for stage violence, who is believable living in the NYC of 1944. Actor can be any physical type, but must be capable of dominating the stage with a cool, unforced sense of danger.

CARLINO
(Male 30s – Early 50s) Carlino is a large man with a large personality to match. He fills a room literally and figuratively. Carlino is recently out of prison and he’s anxious to get back on his feet. Roat’s plan affords him a chance for some quick cash. He doesn’t trust his new partner but he doesn’t have a choice. Though slightly paranoid and a little brusque, he’s a survivor and good at his job; which is convincing people he’s someone else entirely, a dependable, but overworked member of the New York police force.

GLORIA
(Female Early – Mid Teens) Looking for an actress over 18, who can plausibly play a character who is 14 or 15. Gloria is an adolescent on that precarious cusp between a girl and woman. She is smart beyond her years because her home life is extremely tough. Her dad is long gone and her mom isn’t dependable or responsible or respectable. Gloria is fiercely independent, prone to extreme jealousy, and desperate to be taken seriously by the adult world. She has a crush on Sam and resents his wife Susan just for existing even though she makes a little money by running errands for the blind woman. Gloria doesn’t shy away from danger and seems to relish adventure. She proves she cares a lot more than she lets on.

SAM HENDRIX
(Male 30s) Susan’s husband. A good-looking war veteran who met Susan while recovering from post-traumatic stress. He’s a photographer who fancies himself an artist. He is doing his level best to make his way on unstable psychological footing. He’s a survivor and unwilling to entertain thoughts of self-pity, either for himself or Susan. His fierce focus might be pushing his wife away to the extent that she may be uncertain of his loyalty.
