SEEKING

Equity actor/singers for various roles in the upcoming 2017 season.

Seeking submissions from AEA members. AEA members must submit themselves directly in order to be considered via this posting (no agent or third-party submissions).

PREPARATION

Prepare a brief musical theatre song in the style of one of the shows. Have a contrasting selection ready in case it is requested. Accompanist provided. Selections from the shows permitted. Bring picture and resume.

JACK
Male, 18 - 25 years old, Caucasian. Handsome, passionate and charismatic leader of the Newsies. A street-smart kid with a dark artistic soul right beneath the bluster. Not a blowhard. This kid’s the real thing. Must have a great pop tenor voice. Vocal Range: B to A-flat

DAVEY
Male, 18 - 25 years old, Caucasian. A thinker. Raised in a home as opposed to the other Newsies, Davie is the book-smart counterpoint to the other boys. The voice of reason. A nice Jewish boy. Must have a great contemporary tenor voice. Vocal Range: D to A

JOSEPH PULITZER
Male, 40s, Caucasian. The boisterous forefather of Wm. F. Buckley Jr, Glenn Beck and Rupert Murdoch. An on point, know it all, politician. Impolite and impatient with the world. Must sing well. Vocal Range: C to F-sharp

KATHERINE PLUMBER
Female, 18 - 25 years old, Caucasian. The strong willed daughter of Pulitzer. This young lady drips smarts, opinions and confidence. A young Katherine Hepburn or Ellen Page. This damsel needs no prince to save her. Must have a great pop/contemporary musical theater voice with a high belt. Vocal Range: A to E

CRUTCHIE
Male, 18-25 years old, any ethnicity. A slight, sickly boy with a huge heart. He walks with the aid of a crutch due to a bad leg, but that doesn’t hold him back from being right in the middle of any mischief. A real charmer. Vocal Range: A to B-flat

MEDDA
Female, 40s – 60s, any ethnicity. A vaudeville star of the Bowery variety. Risqué, tough, with a big voice and GREAT comic delivery. Vocal Range: F to E

SHREK
Our story's title character. A big, green, terrifying ogre who lives alone on a swamp. He embarks on a journey to rid his land of fairytale creatures and, along the way, falls in love with Fiona. Begins as a grumpy hermit, but reveals his layers and eventually becomes the hero.

FIONA
The beautiful princess of Far Far Away, she transforms into an ogre every night when the sun sets. Rescued by Shrek and eventually falls in love with him. Quirky, blunt, and multitalented, she is not an ordinary princess.

Vocal range bottom: F3

DONKEY
A talking donkey who joins Shrek on the run from Farquaad's guards. Quite the chatterbox, he is not deterred by Shrek's looks and practically forces himself into his good graces. Easily frightened and pushy, but also an optimistic with heart.

LORD FARQUAAD
The comically short, ruthless ruler of Duloc. He is in search of a princes to marry so that he can become king. Has an intensely unfair bias against fairytale creatures that stems from a resentment of his father. Self-absorbed, lonely, and cruel.

Vocal range top: D5
Vocal range bottom: B2

DRAGON
A dragon that has been charged with guarding Princess Fiona in her isolated castle. She eventually falls in love with Donkey and attempts to keep him there forever. Imposing and flirtatious, but tired of her job as the glorified baby-sitter.

Vocal range top: Eb5
Vocal range bottom: F3

GINGY
A gingerbread man initially kidnapped by Lord Farquaad. His wit and resolution help him both avoid trouble and inspire the rest of the fairytale creatures. Puppet. Can be operated by actress appearing as Sugar Plum Fairy.

PINOCCHIO
The leader of the fairytale creatures. He is an animated puppet whose nose grows every time he lies. Plenty of sass with a penchant for lying.

DONNA
(early 40s – the mother of a 20 year old girl) Attractive and free-spirited. A former lead singer in a group called “Donna and the Dynamos” who now owns and runs a hotel/casino on a Greek island. A strong feminist who also has a zany and vulnerable side.

TANYA
(40s) A former singer in the “Dynamos”. Rich, sophisticated, acerbic, funny, and witty. Supporting Principal role.

ROSIE
(early 40s) Also a former singer in the “Dynamos” who now writes for and runs a feminist press. She’s confident, strong, and funny on the outside but shy underneath. Kooky and fun, good comic actress, bit of a clown. Actress who sings.

SOPHIE
(Early 20’s) A very special young woman who is determined to find the romance and happiness she feels eluded her mother. Has a wild, zany spirit even though she pursues a conventional marriage. Pop soprano who dances

LISA
(18-25) Sophie’s friend who arrives to be a bridesmaid. Very energetic and kooky. Strongly considering ALL ethnicities. Should sing and dance well.

ALI
(18-25) Sophie’s friend. Impulsive and fun. Should contrast to Lisa and Sophie. Strongly considering ALL ethnicities. Should sing and dance well.

SAM
(40’s) May be Sophie’s father. Left Donna 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Charming, successful architect. Actor who sings. Tenor/High Baritone.

HARRY
(40’s) May be Sophie’s father. British financier. He’s wealthy, buttoned-up, and conservative but trying to reconnect with his freer, youthful self. Must do a very convincing English accent. Also an actor who sings. High baritone, tenor. British accent.

BILL
(40’s) May be Sophie’s father. A travel writer with no possessions or strings. Good-natured and always ready for adventure. Funny, preferably a big or imposing man. Australian Accent.

SKY
(mid to late 20s) Sophie’s fiance. Athletic, attractive – has given up his life as a successful young businessman in order to make over Donna’s taverna and marry Sophie. Should sing and dance well. Tenor.

PEPPER
(20s) Sky’s friend. Helps run the hotel. Charming, loves women, always flirting. Must be a good mover/dancer. Strongly considering ALL ethnicities. Should sing and dance well. Baritone/tenor.

EDDIE
(20s) Another friend of Sky and hotel worker. Laid-back, easygoing. Also a mover/dancer role. Strongly considering ALL ethnicities. Should sing and dance well. Baritone/tenor.
