Breakdown

The 39 Steps
Richard Hannay: mid-30’s – mid-40’s, Role is cast, seeking possible future replacements/backups only. Our attractive, pencil-moustached hero. Dashing, commanding, able to put across arch humor without being self-important. Scenes are played with the highest of stakes. ROLE IS CAST. SEEKING POSSIBLE FUTURE REPLACEMENT/ BACKUPS ONLY.

Annabella Schmidt / Pamela / Margaret: 30s. Role is cast, seeking possible future replacements/backups only. Beautiful, femme fatale, plays a German spy, a proper English woman and a Scottish farmer’s wife, the three women with which Hannay has romantic entanglements. ROLE IS CAST. SEEKING POSSIBLE FUTURE REPLACEMENT/ BACKUPS ONLY.

Clown 1 and Clown 2: 30s-40s. Males to play dozens of roles in the play, including heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object, occasionally playing multiple characters at once. Experience with physical comedy, improv and European accents a plus.

HOW I BECAME A PIRATE - A new musical:
Jeremy (or Jennifer) Jacob - a boy or girl of about 10 – 13 years old or thereabouts, our young hero/heroine, a neglected child (with a brand new baby sister) who yearns to find adventure and be part of something “big.” Imaginative and curious, he or she could likely be the next Bill Gates. Pure tenor/soprano voice, unaffected and expressive – gutsy and up to the pirate challenge.
Braid Beard - age 30 – 55, the Pirate Captain – a man of girth with a “braided beard” on his chin. He’s good-natured, warm, if sometimes slightly addled, Braid is the leader of the pirates. Baritone role requires lots of character and charisma.
Swill the Pirate - 20s – 30s, slight build with wire-rim eyeglasses. He’s philosophical, intellectual, and gets blamed for everything that goes wrong. Think a shellshocked but pompous “Le Fou” from Beauty and the Beast. Sings "Read the Map." Must have a falsetto.
Sharktooth the Pirate – male, late 20s – 30s, foreboding, “the most feared pirate in all the seven seas” – next to Braid Beard. He has a scowling grin and wears a patch on eye - yet he’s a “sensitive guy.” Comic baritone, who moves well, who sings “I’m Really Just a Sensitive Guy.” Think Alan Rickman, if you dare!
Pirate Pierre (talks with a French accent – ship’s cook - enjoys fine French cuisine) – Can be man or woman. Perhaps a sexy “Babette” type, or a dashing young Gerard Depardieu with attitude.
Max the Pirate – Male, 30s - 40s wears a stuffed Parrot on his shoulder - “a stuffed, plush Parrot but we don’t have the heart to tell ‘im ‘ees not real.” Might be a merry old guy (read: is known to tip the bottle a bit). Baritenor, sings "Talk Like A Pirate."
Pirate Seymour Braunschwagger – 20s – 30s, a typical Pirate First Mate. The ‘strong but silent’ type, this pirate often addresses the audience and although he does Braid’s bidding, he sometimes considers himself a slightly smarter pirate
Pirate Scurvy Dog (A typical Pirate Second Mate) Another of the singing band of pirates. Scurvy Dog is a mystery wrapped up in an enigma.

Avenue Q
1. Princeton/Rod (20’s) charismatic singing actor (able to sustain a high G comfortably) who can bring full, funny life to two very distinct puppet characters: PRINCETON: Sincere, charming, “fresh-faced” kid just out of college...searching for his purpose in life. ROD: A tightly-wound closeted Republican…deeply romantic and tortured…much of the show’s humor and heart is found in Rod’s rocky journey
2. Kate Monster/Lucy T. Slut (20’s) singing actress able to present two very distinct “strong” puppet women:
KATE MONSTER: definitely not a generic ingénue…Kate is romantic and sensitive, but also practical, tart, and totally able to stand up for herself but falls hard for an emotionally unavailable Princeton. LUCY T. SLUT: the name says it all…a vampy vixen with a dangerous side…knows her effect on men and uses it to her full advantage…a belter with boobs
3. Trekkie Monster/Nicky/Boy Bad Idea Bear (20’s) versatile singing actor (able to sustain a high A comfortably)…ideally with “cartoon” voice skills…able to bring to life three totally different puppet characters:
TREKKIE MONSTER: a reclusive creature obsessed with the Internet…a huge “monster” presence…and a surprisingly big heart. NICKY: Rod’s roommate, best friend, and straight object of Rod’s unrequited affection …unemployed and a bit of slacker…a really good friend who totally supports and encourages his pal to be true to himself. BOY BAD IDEA BEAR: snuggly and cute, cute, cute teddy bear...all of the worst possible ideas presented in the most positive way ever!!
4. Mrs. T./Girl Bad Idea Bear/Others: (20’s) highly versatile singing actress…ideally with “cartoon” voice skills and advanced movement skills. Plays 2 roles and also serves as a puppeteer assistant for Trekkie, Nicky, Rod, Lucy, and Kate at various times. The roles: MRS. T.: Kate’s ancient boss…a humorless, tough as nails old broad. GIRL BAD IDEA BEAR: just like Boy Bear…only pitched even higher and cuter!!!
5. Brian: (early 30’s) an aspiring comedian…an easy-come, easy-go kind of guy, a realistic yet sympathetic ear for all his friends on Avenue Q .
6. Gary Coleman (late 20’s/30’s) yep, that Gary Coleman…seek an African-American singing actress or actor with an edge and great comic chops to portray the funny, sardonic, former child star…now the superintendent on Avenue Q (key will be negotiated for actor or actress)
7. Christmas Eve: (late 20’s/early 30’s) Brian’s wife- a smart, strong, painfully direct therapist who has moved to Avenue Q from Japan…speaks and sings with a subtle Japanese dialect. (Strong belt to E flat)

Gary Coleman (late 20’s/30’s) yep, that Gary Coleman…seek an African-American singing actress or actor with an edge and great comic chops to portray the funny, sardonic, former child star…now the superintendent on Avenue Q (key will be negotiated for actor or actress)
