Breakdown
The Reason For The Season by Matt Pelfrey.
Spend an outrageous Christmas Eve with a churlish Santa, a kidnapped elf and a handful of hapless souls in need of some holiday spirit. Amid the shrapnel of yuletide yearning, broken dreams and poignant revelations, can the magic of the season spark hope in their hearts? With these two riotous, irreverent short plays that even Ebenezer Scrooge could appreciate, be prepared for a pair of good old-fashioned, foul-mouthed, feel-good holiday anti-classics … and just a wee dusting of that cherished Christmas feeling. Double-bill with The Night Before Christmas
Actors will perform in repertory with The Night Before Christmas by Matt Pelfrey.
Please see The Night Before Christmas Equity announcement for additional character descriptions
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Deeanne: 30-40, a fearless fireplug. She would walk thru fire for her son. She has just lost her job and her bank account was hacked… and Christmas is right around the corner. She is a hero like so many other mothers who would do anything to make sure their children get what they want for Christmas. Actor will also perform in repertory in The Night Before Christmas. .
James: 30-40, a proud, blue-collar dad. He has been bent by life, but he’s not quite broken. His hours have just been cut back only adding to the family’s financial struggles. He loves his son, but doesn’t quite understand him. He is plagued by vivid nightmares… of waterboarding Santa. Actor will also perform in repertory in The Night Before Christmas.
NOTE:Both roles require above-average amounts of stage violence. Though the actors needn’t be certified combatants, they should have a high acumen in movement and a willingness to explore physical stage violence.
All roles are acceptable for non-traditional casting unless otherwise specified. Artists Rep seeks and encourages participation by performers of all races and ethnicities.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
Gary: male, late 20s-early 40s. Goofy deadbeat. Works in a toy warehouse, where entire play takes place. This lovable, low-life doofus is reluctant to dismiss the Elf as a mere junkie or lunatic. A charming lout. Note: The actor playing “Gary” may be cast as “James” in the first half of our double-bill.
Simon: male, late 20s-early 40s. Gary’s provocative friend. Equally lowlife. A hate-filled crank with a secretly sensitive side. Aghast that Gary could believe that elves exist. Insists on turning over their prisoner, the Elf, to the coppers. Gary’s best mate. Note: The actor playing “Simon” may be cast as “James” in the first half of our double-bill.
Cherry: female, late 20s-early 40s. Sharp-tongued prostitute looking to collect Gary’s promised payment for services rendered – she shows up to score some Power Rangers for her son before Christmas morning. Gary is her best customer. Note: The actor playing “Cherry” may be cast as “Deanna” in the first half of our double-bill.
NOTE:All roles require Cockney dialect
