Breakdown

Production Description:

The Meantime: A Traveling Radio Spectacle
''Welcome to The Meantime, the space between what has passed and what will be. It is a place of mystery and imagination, from the grotesque to the sublime, where yesteryear meets tomorrowland. This traveling variety show delivers live radio plays, song and dance, horrors and vaudeville in equal measure. So sit back and let your mind relax, sip a cup of joe or hot chocolate, and spring forward to the past. We will see you soon…in The Meantime.''

The Meantime is an evening’s cabaret to be developed at Theater Emory. While the show is at its heart a celebration of live radio drama from days gone by, it may also have elements of vaudeville, dance, music or mime to accompany the live audio presentations. Some of the radio shows are classic pieces from the 1930’s such as Flash Gordon, Quiet, Please!, and Abbott and Costello. Others are original and more modern in tone. There will be approximately 12 actors in the show: 4 focused on voice acting (described below), and 8 additional ensemble members (to be played by student actors).

Character Breakdown:

Serling Fessender: Male (35 – 55)
Any ethnicity. The boisterous ringleader of the traveling radio spectacle. He is equal parts PT Barnum and TS Eliot. An extravagant performer with a hidden secret. Excellent voice actor and hopeless romantic. May or may not have been a man of great wealth and power at some point in his future.

Reginald Hertz: Male (30 – 50)
Any ethnicity. Serling’s comrade in arms and able friend, Abbott to his Costello. A dryer sensibility and fiery spirit. A revolutionary at heart. Excellent voice actor. Ability to carry a tune and/or dance is a definite plus.

Calliope ''Pill'' Dickle: Female (30 – 50)
Any ethnicity. Calliope is a ghostly presence. She may or may not be real. She is like a banshee: Quiet and unassuming in demeanor until anguish and horror come out in her powerful voice.

Gretchen Blodgett: Female (35 – 55)
Any ethnicity. Sassy and brash, Gretchen is a true ''dame'' from the 1920’s era. Her voice sounds like she eats cigarettes. She is a perfect contrast to the ephemeral quality of Calliope, a grounded realist to foil Calliope’s ghostly demeanor.
