Comic retelling of the classic Sherlock Holmes tale as performed by a traveling troupe of actors, determined to portray all of the characters in the sprawling epic. While they deliver a remarkably complete rendition of the story, they battle through the complications that come with any acting company, particularly one this small, competitive, joyous & determined. The play is a love letter to the theatre & to the tradition of theatrical companies.
Seeking (all roles are available):
Casting note: The production demands three actors with impeccable comic timing & who are physically agile & inventive. The actors play both genders, many ages & must switch costumes & accents with lightning-quick precision. No matter what character they are playing, of course, at heart they are informed by the relationship between the actors playing them. Actors with clown & dance training are preferred. Actors with experience at sleight-of-hand or magic are also of extreme interest. All ethnicities, sizes & types welcome!
Javier / Holmes:
30-50. Esteemed actor. Miscast as Holmes, but determined to be the iconic detective. His fiery temper bleeds through to the other characters he plays. Hot-headed & ridiculously passionate about this evening's performance. His ego is easily bruised & intrudes upon his professionalism at times.
Jason / Sir Henry:
25-40, British. Master of disguises; perhaps the most consummate actor of this small troupe. Fearless & agile. Nothing can stand in the way of his getting through this play. Has a light, cheery, wonderfully inventive energy born of 1000s of unappreciated performances.
John / Watson:
40s, British. Slightly vain. A bit battered by his career in the theatre. Not quite as bright as his colleagues. The lines between acting & surviving the play are not always clear to him. Believes he is the lead.
Theatre’s statement: “The Depot Theatre is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and we support Non-Traditional Casting.”
