Breakdown

ABOUT
THE ABSOLUTE BRIGHTNESS OF LEONARD PELKEY is a solo show in which award winning storyteller, James Lecesne, portrays various characters of a small Jersey shore town as they struggle to understand what happened to 14-year-old Leonard Pelkey. Adapted from his YA novel, Absolute Brightness, this solo show begins with the discovery of Leonard’s disappearance, follows a criminal investigation led by detective Chuck DeSantis, and concludes with a trial that reveals the shocking truth.

SEEKING

ONE UNDERSTUDY
Male, to play late 30s – 60s. Seeking one sharp and versatile performer able to transform from role to role on a dime. Vivid, believable and extraordinarily chameleon-like actor to understudy the following characters in this solo (multiple character) play.

CHUCK DESANTIS (40’s) middle-aged, a bit worn, with a strong Jersey accent.
He could be part of a mob, but he’s one of the good guys.

MARTY BRANAHAN (50’s) is close to retirement age, big and brash. Street
smart but that’s about all.

ELLEN HERTLE (40) As the owner of the local Beauty Salon, she’s learned
how to use her personal beauty to advantage. Tough talker, heart of gold.

PHOEBE HERTLE (16) awkward, shy, but with a sly and knowing sense of
humor. Been around the block, but not all the way.

BUDDY HOWARD (50’s) is middle-aged, a bit fey, and totally British. Speaks
with a bit of a lisp, teaches drama and knows all about it from personal
experience.

GLORIA SALZANO (60’s) is a diminutive woman with eyeglasses and a strong
Jersey accent.

MARION TOCHTERMAN (60’s) is a customer of Hair Today Salon, a lifelong
smoker, and she sounds it.

OTTO BECKERMAN (70’s) the go-to guy if you have a broken cuckoo clock or
an antique pocket watch. German.

TRAVIS LEMBECK (18) the kind of kid with too much past and not enough
future. Trouble. But with charm for days.
