NOTE: THIS IS AN ALL-MALE PRODUCTION

Seeking:

Baptista/Tailor
Mid 50’s+. A well-to-do gentleman of Padua and Katherine and Bianca's father, Baptista is a self-made immigrant in Padua with great pride in what he has accomplished. He is an elegant force of nature with stakes in his status in society who sometimes displays an alpha streak. He is beleaguered, having trouble marrying his two daughters because his eldest daughter Katherine is a believed to be shrew. Not an object of sympathy as he ignores the question of his daughters' happiness in seeking husbands for them. Tailor: A fashionable fop who builds a gown for Katherine, and is insulted by Petruchio Must have excellent facility with language.

Tranio
20-early 30’s. Lucentio’s companion and street-smart enabler. Tranio is a quick witted, lighthearted and mischievous clown who can pass for a handsome young suitor when he takes on the identity of Lucentio. Perhaps one of the most intelligent people in the entire play. He advises his master to follow his feelings of leaning towards pleasure, rather than study. He assumes Lucentio's identity in order to help him win Bianca's heart and, in doing this, suggests that what separates a master from his servant is a simple matter of appearance. Lucentio, Tranio and Biondello are a fierce threesome of guys together. Must have excellent facility with language.

Gremio/ Vincentio
60’s+. Gremio is an elderly clown. An aging and wealthy Paduan. He lusts over the young Bianca and wishes to woo and wed her. He offers Bianca wealth and a lifestyle of comfort, but nothing in the way of love and true companionship. He is, at times, a bit lecherous and manipulative in his approach towards Bianca. Gremio experiences real tragedy when he realizes that a life-time of hoarding his wealth and hoardings still does not advantage his desire for marriage. Vincentio: Lucentio’s father; a wealthy merchant who resides in Pisa. Strict, traditional, zipped up and straightforward. He can be quite reactive at times, but has a very sincere and genuinely loving core. Vincentio adores his son and wants to protect him at all costs. He is devastated when he discovers that Lucentio may have deceived him, but ultimately delighted when he sees the great beauty that is Bianca. Must have excellent facility with language.

Widow
30’s-40’s. In this world, she is an admired (and reviled) town gossip, performer and a kind of master of ceremonies. In contrast to Kate and Bianca, the Widow may in fact be an actual drag queen. She is a strong woman who exists successfully and independently in the commerce driven Padua. She marries Hortensio after he discovers he has lost Bianca. At Lucentio's banquet she loses her husband a bet when she does not come dutifully when he calls. The Widow is the centerpiece performer for Bianca’s wedding. Experience with creating a one-(wo)man drag act or vaudeville desirable. Must Understudy Katherina Minola. Must have excellent facility with language, be an exceptional singer and have experience with movement.

Biondello/Messenger
20’s. In this production, a fixer / classic hustler who is hired by Lucentio and Tranio to serve their needs. He aids Tranio in the plot for Bianca’s hand in marriage. Biondello is physically impressive and has a deeply literal sense of humor. Not the brightest bulb, but earnest, sincere, and genuinely attractive. Lucentio, Tranio and Biondello are a fierce threesome of guys together and should have strong physical chemistry. Messenger: Baptista’s go-between who brings word to Bianca to help decorate Katherina’s rooms for her upcoming nuptials. Must have excellent facility with Language, be an exceptional singer and have experience with movement.
